Tim Hinck's Colombiana was premiered on August 31, 2023 in Chattanooga. This unusual instrumentation calls for violin, viola, and two cellos (one scordatura), and for each of the performers to also play various percussion instruments. The performers at the premiere were J.P. Brien-Slack (violin), Metiney Suwanawongse (viola), Paul Vest (cello), and Ben Van Winkle (cello), and these same musicians perform on this recording made later that same year.

Droid's Afternoon - Innuendo

Premiere of Tim Hinck’s “But she’s got eyes” for three vocalists and orchestra. Elaine Daiber (soprano), Daniel McGrew (tenor), Thomas West (baritone); performed in Chattanooga, TN on December 7, 2019.

The text is by Lynn Powell—a dear friend and fellow native Southerner—from her book ‘Season of the Second Thought’ (2017, University of Wisconsin Press); I have set her inimitable, pungent words before, and surely will again. Her texts are infused with Southern soil, insects, lust, and the mystical parts of fundamentalist religion that we both stepped away from, and yet call to the deepest part of every person’s humanity. This piece is picture of the Madonna and Christ child, contrasting the pomp of Renaissance painting with the realism of humanist sensuality, “where every urgent thing there is to say, can be said in milk.”

Tim Hinck’s “But she’s got eyes”

This piece was commissioned by photographers Peter Happel Christian and Phillip Andrew Lewis, who work collectively as Clear As Day. It appeared in a series of books titled Land_AA which explores the legacy and mythology of American photographer Ansel Adams. This particular work centers around a recording of Adams typing a letter on December 31, 1969, discovered by Happel Christian and Lewis at the Adams Archive, which they had transcribed to sheet music by composer Tim Hinck. The printed volume contained the sheet music score, a portfolio of photographs by Happel Christian and Lewis, a drawing by Lenka Clayton, Leung’s text, and recordings of executions of the score by Clayton, Chris Duncan, Michael Masaru Flora, Barbara Held, Jonathan Kaiser, Tiffany Ng, Greg Pond & Cesar Léal, and Steve Roden. This piece of aleatoric music can be performed on any instrument, and all pitches are chosen at the discretion of the performer.
