Diplo, seeing an opportunity for free publicity using the burning man name, dismissed all ten principles for his own self gain.  "Don't be a Diplo!"   is the saying that arose from the 2023 gathering in the Blackrock Desert.  During the event, Black Rock City is the second largest city in the state of Nevada.  When the rain hit, Diplo fled and left the city on foot.   He walked to the gate, leaving his RV, camp, and equipment to be cleaned-up and hauled-out of the desert by others.  Thus, the moral of the story is "Don't be a Diplo!"

The 10 Principles of Burning Man:

Radical Inclusion
Anyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community.

Gifting
Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.

Decommodification
In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory experience.

Radical Self-reliance
Burning Man encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on their inner resources.

Radical Self-expression
Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than the individual or a collaborating group can determine its content. It is offered as a gift to others. In this spirit, the giver should respect the rights and liberties of the recipient.

Communal Effort
Our community values creative cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce, promote and protect social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of communication that support such interaction.

Civic Responsibility
We value civil society. Community members who organize events should assume responsibility for public welfare and endeavor to communicate civic responsibilities to participants. They must also assume responsibility for conducting events in accordance with local, state and federal laws.

Leaving No Trace
Our community respects the environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them.

Participation
Our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart.

Immediacy
Immediate experience is, in many ways, the most important touchstone of value in our culture. We seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society, and contact with a natural world exceeding human powers. No idea can substitute for this experience.

Lushpod #72 is a meditation of mortality, with pulsing bass lines. DD leaves a giant hole in hearts and in our dance floors. But his laughter and presence is woven deep in our souls. This is my first time spinning a set, so apoligies if it is a little rough around the edges.  Originally compiled on a Pioneer DDJ-WeGo2 and uploaded to MixCloud November 11, 2018.  It was created at the request of the Booty Momma (a.k.a.:  Domma Momma), shortly after returning from my first visit to Black Rock City, Burning Man 2018.  Thank you for setting me free. Our camp of friends was sharing a twin cabin with the "Bubbles And Babies" camp,  a spin-off from the well known Burning Man camp "Bubbles and Bass."  This time they brought their baby to the burn - literally there was a baby in our shared cabin at the burn.  (We now know why this cabin was still available to share, lol).  Anyhow, somebody was supposed to spin for the Bubbles and Babies' Sunday Morning Mimosa Happy Hours, but the DJ was a no-show.  My buddy Scott (aka.: NJTeton) was sound asleep in the cabin, having recently just gone to sleep an hour or so earlier.  That didn't deter me, I couldn't let a party go without a DJ.  Jumping into producer mode, I shook and prodded Mr. Cassidy, literally dragging him out of bed.  I cooked-up some scrambled eggs, toast, and coffee outside on my Coleman stove, and fed the man, handed him a glass of champagne and NJTeton got into the flow.  Then I continued to cook on the Coleman stove to feed anybody that was hungry, while NJTeton spun this three hour set.  Thank you Scott, and gratitude to Bubbles and Babies for throwing the party, and needing a last minute DJ!

I have spent many past posts musing about the early days, so I will spare you words of nostalgia today. Instead, I want to hit you with the kind of set that I feel is an accumulation of my past experiences of what works on a dance floor, what I personally love, and which of those sounds I feel connect with what's happening today. 

Music has largely stopped giving us anything truly new in the past decade, but the absence of newness doesn't mean we shouldn't discover music that is new to US, and sometimes we should also remind ourselves of the great eras, genres and grooves we may have forgotten. So today, instead of giving you newness, I present to you my musical opinion on contemporary timelessness.

I would personally dance my ass off to this set. LMK if you would too.
