This was a project I recorded for a film scoring class years ago. I think it turned out pretty cool!

The Scarecrow

Archangel is a three movement suite written for a french horn soloist. It experiments with abstract tonality while maintaining a tonal center as well as melodic and lyrical passages. I titled this piece “Archangel” as a portrayal of 1 Thessalonians 4:16 where in the end times, God descends from heaven and cries out a command “with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God,”

Each movement of this piece draws inspiration from joyful memories of my recent years. ‘Waves’ is from a time spent with my family at the ocean. The movement itself is reflective of the rise and fall of ocean waves. The ‘Dance’ derives from many fun moments with friends. It utilizes jazz like syncopation and free harmony with a single dancing motif pervading through the whole movement. ‘Rain’ comes from a memory with my great friend Brian, of us running through a heavy thunderstorm for the fun of it. The music portrays flashes of lightning in the distance with low and rumbling responses of thunder that gradually get closer and closer as the piece continues. There is a constant pitter patter of rain-fall sounding, and a melody, representing our joyful run through the rain, which acts as a unifying thematic element for the movement.

This is my own arrangement and variations on the tune by Thomas Campbell from my favorite hymn, ‘And Can It Be?’. It is written for string quartet and string orchestra. Charles Wesley wrote the text of this hymn soon after he came to faith in Christ in 1738. The words are as follows:
And can it be that I should gain
An int’rest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain—
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
Refrain:
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
He left His Father’s throne above—
So free, so infinite His grace—
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam’s helpless race:
’Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For, O my God, it found out me!
Long my imprisoned spirit lay,
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quick’ning ray—
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine;
Alive in Him, my living Head,

	While the arrangement is strictly instrumental, I wanted the text to drive the form and texture of the piece. Therefore, I wanted there to be a contemplative quality to the music, that over time breaks forth into pure and ecstatic joy at the thought of being free and alive in Christ.

This piece is intended to sound like nightmarish film music.

Sailor's Nightmare

Tim is a young and aspiring composer and arranger. He has worked arranging music for the church for many years and has a growing repertoire of sacred works and songs. He has also written an array of original compositions.  For Tim, the goal of his art is not to tell people what to think, but rather to inspire people to think deeply. To ponder the questions of life, beauty, darkness, joy, sorrow, hope, and God. And to let the music speak for itself.
