Twenty-five years after starting this mixtape series, SlowJams Vol 22 is here!  This tradition started back in 1998 while I was living above Walgreens in the Lower Haight, San Francisco with some of the people who made me the man I am today …..The series featured music from the deeper, “late night” end of my record collection that almost never made its’s way onto the regular DJ mixtapes we were all making in the late nineties.  Over the years I have been told that these recordings have soundtracked many of my friends lives. Their romances, their after-hours’ and their Sunday sessions. This latest instalment has some heavyweight tracks on it….hope you enjoy!

He slots firmly into chic French fashion culture and gritty, underground musical eclecticism at the same time. Over the past couple of years his label has released music from far and wide: pop obscurities from Israel, punk funk from Lithuania and experimental electronics from the likes of Mutado Pintado, Golden Bug and Margot. Recorded at home in Berlin in late October 2016 - one take on CDJ’s. 

I’m always listening for a particular finish on tracks. I’m drawn towards tight, driven recordings - saturated, tape-y stuff or slightly boomy badly EQ’d biz. I find myself shying away from music that sounds over produced & I think that the tracks on the mix reflect this - all the music has a bit of character, whether or not it’s a shining example of perfectly functional club gear (though there is a bit of that on here).

I try not to stress too hard over recorded mixes these days - I used to spend too long planning them, favouring music that blended well over tracks with genuine energy and as a result slightly sucking the life out of the finished product. I’m an instinctive DJ - I don’t work sets out before I step up, so whilst it’s difficult to recreate the club environment in your living room, I did want this podcast to reflect what & how I’m playing out at the moment - rather than record something explicitly for home listening.

I’ve just released my latest single ‘Use of Weapons’ on my Aery Metals label, also been busy over the last year working on a lot of original music, plus a load of collaborative stuff - some of it geared towards the dance floor but a lot of it looking further afield. Very excited to share some of this over the next year or so.

From running the legendary Rub N Tug parties to being described as the best editor on the planet right now by a certain DJ Harvey, Eric knows what's what when it comes to peak time party selection.
