A power is on the earth and in the air,
From which the vital spirit shrinks afraid,
And shelters him in nooks of deepest shade,
From the hot steam and from the fiery glare.
Look forth upon the earth—her thousand plants
Are smitten; even the dark sun-loving maize
Faints in the field beneath the torrid blaze;
The herd beside the shaded fountain pants;
For life is driven from all the landscape brown;
The bird hath sought his tree, the snake his den,
The trout floats dead in the hot stream, and men
Drop by the sunstroke in the populous town:
As if the Day of Fire had dawned, and sent
Its deadly breath into the firmament.

This story was translated by an ancient scribe and is told in different ways depending on the culture. The chapters have been lost but the story remains intact.

Most of you will know Thomas Hammann from his mix CD for Live at Robert Johnson, a collaboration with Gerd Janson. Hammann is a DJ since the early 80s and few have soaked up German house history like him: What fire Ata Macias kindled with the Wild Pitch Club during the mid-nineties in Frankfurt, Thomas Hammann ignited at the Kesselhaus in nearby Darmstadt. In July, Thomas debuted as a producer on Workshop, under the name 808 mate: with nothing less but a Grace Kelly of a house track, luminously beautiful.

This mix is a homage to the Changing Weather Nights at the Golden Pudel Club in Hamburg that were established by Carsten Jost (@david_lieske) and Lawrence (@lawrence_dial) around the turn of the millennium. Coinciding with the founding of their record label Dial (that turns 20 this year) these weekly club-nights served as the main place of musical experimentation and social interaction for the label and its artists which greatly informed what was later described as the "Dial Sound". The mix is a loose interpretation of a memory of that specific atmosphere at Changing Weather Nights without exclusively limiting itself to music that was produced at this very moment in time.

Deep conversation always seems to go the best with deep music. So - we tend to listen to dub techno, other deep shades of techno, jazz, experimental, and deeper styles of hip hop during these trips - it seems to fit well with the new blankets of snow and the serenity of our surroundings. I wanted to record a mix that would capture the feel of the recent trip that we had together this year, but also reflect my love of the Sungate label and the quality music they have been putting out on the EP’s and Podcasts.
