Peshekhod, the debut album from Dima Pantyushin and Sasha Lipsky, oscillates through an immaculate synth-pop ecosystem in which every shift feels both accurate in its absurdity and divinely danceable. 

The album (“peshekhod” translates to “pedestrian”) investigates the inner narrative of a Muscovite as he wanders through the city, recalls his work, and contemplates his existence. It’s roughly autobiographical in scope— Pantyushin was born and raised in Moscow, co-runs Cafe Enthusiast in the city center, and is a visual artist by trade—yet explores feelings universal. His lyrics conjure the nostalgia and joy of parenthood in “Ray of Sunshine,” the paranoia of metropolitan life on “Pigeon,” and the slippage of time on “Chess.” 

Fellow Moscow native and longtime friend, Sasha Lipsky, who writes and performs with his brother in Simple Symmetry, joins Pantyushin on production. Lipsky weaves entire sonic ecosystems for Dima’s instinctual observations and adroit lyrics. The result is a musical landscape that bounces between the terrestrial and the divine as Pantyushin’s croon and Lipsky’s synth-heavy compositions swell with aliveness. 

Pantyushin and Lipsky graft genres to their electronic framework throughout Peshekhod. “Nature” summons 1950’s pastiche complete with upbeat mellotron, while “Time” and “House (With an Attic)” go from ethereal ambient to subterranean techno and back again. But every oscillation and shift feels part of the same system. Pantyushin never strays too far from his pedestrian protagonist. He knows the best stories are the ones in which we can see ourselves, while Lipsky dresses each observation with earworms you’ll struggle to shake, even if you don’t speak the language. Peshekhod is a picaresque in miniature. A record that considers the stations of the day in deft detail, for all to tap into.  

Peshekhod features album art designed by Pantyushin and arranged by Will Work For Good. Peshekhod will be released on Beats In Space Records in March 2020 on limited vinyl and limitless digital platforms.

As a DJ, producer, remixer, sound engineer, and musician Justin Van Der Volgen has both feet firmly planted in the New York music scene. He runs the My Rules imprint and has released on a wide array of labels including Golf Channel (@olfhannelecordings), @ESP-Institute, @Warp-records, @RunningBack - the list goes on. Justin was fortunate enough to dance at iconic NYC parties like Body & Soul, Shelter, and Soul Summit which helped shape and influence his taste. In this mix he takes it back to the Golden Age of New York House by drawing on said influences and taking inspiration from the legendary NYC Kiss FM and WBLS radio master mixes by the likes of Bobby Konders, Tony Humphries and John Robinson. This past February, MEMCO and WCBN organized a Black History Month Symposium featuring a panel of three prolific Detroit-based producers, DJs, and activists. During the conversation, each panelist used their own experience to contextualize the emergence of Detroit techno, the music’s DIY ethos, and the ways in which the music inspires their work today. Introductory comments by MEMCO co-president Jordan Stanton ('19-'20).

“Mad” Mike Banks
Mike Banks is a Detroit-based DJ, producer, and founding member of the Underground Resistance (UR). He currently lives in Detroit, Michigan and is a former studio musician, having played with Parliament/Funkadelic among others. He worked in the second half of the 1980s with the collective Members of the House, releasing several 12" singles. In the late '80s he and Jeff Mills formed UR as an uncompromising, independent outlet for music imbued with a critical edge and an often futurist outlook. Together with Mills, Banks built UR into an internationally recognized and respected name. He is also the owner of Submerge Distribution, an independent record label which distributes Detroit-based techno worldwide.

Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale
Stacey “Hotwaxx” is a DJ and producer who has been deeply embedded in Detroit’s dance scene since 1989. She was a mainstay on the radio stations in the mid to late 80s, including WLBS, WHYT, WDRQ and WJLB, and won the Motor City Mix contest 10k prize. Stacey has been featured on numerous Internet radio shows and is currently featured on www.deepspaceradio.com. She currently teaches and designs DJ & production classes with Spin Inc, Girls Rock Detroit (GRD) camp, Give A Beat, Seraphine Collective, and Detroit Students of the Arts (DSA). Hotwaxx also formed a live music group, Nyumba Muziki, which has performed at the Charles H Wright Museum of African American History, and for the Detroit 300 Conservancy.

Ron Johnson (DJ Jungle 313)
Ron is a native Detroit DJ and educator who recognized a vital need to fill the creative gaps left by the public-school system’s abandonment of an arts curricula. He is committed to empowering disadvantaged youth and at-risk communities with music that inspires. He is the executive director of Spin Inc, a 501(c)(3) organization providing DJ and Music production education for young adults in Detroit. He is also a core organizer of the annual Detroit Electronic Music Camp (DEMC) that takes place during Movement.
