Please introduce yourself
- My name is Johanna, I produce and play electronic music, both DJ and live performer. Moved to Sweden last year after 13 years in Berlin, and recently started up a creative space here in an old car garage, where I have my hair salon, host music events, exhibitions, flea markets and workshops etc
 
Can you describe your relationship to music throughout your life?
- It's always been there but changing a lot during the years. It has however always been spiritual to me in a non-religious way, music has always been a great way of communicating my inner thoughts and emotions that can't be described with words.

How did Berlin influence the way you make and listen to music?
- It wasn't so much about Berlin itself, it was more about moving away from everyone I knew and everything that I did in Sweden, and moving to a new (and at the time cheaper) place, where I could afford and take the time to be working with music and be alone. I only DJ'd locally in Berlin for the first couple of years before I started touring, so I wasn't really influenced by the "berlin technoscene" too much. I was mostly amazed about the way people partied for days at a time, but for me partying too much meant having no energy left to be creative in the studio. 13 years went by very fast I'll tell you that. One thing that I do miss in Berlin are the very many record stores to buy vinyl, but Malmö has some really good ones too actually (Bolero and Rundgång for example), and to go out partying daytime. And being out for too long.

How does it feel to be back in Malmo now, both in terms of music and life in general?
- Oh my god, i'm so happy to be here. The crew I've found here have already thrown a few open-airs, a couple of club nights where we've done everything from decor to DJ. It's so inspiring! Berlin is filled to the brim with so many people doing the same thing, which can also mean that it's very easy to get ungrateful/jealous of your DJ-friends which is kind of terrible actually. 

How did you approach your Patience release, and how did that differ from your usual approach to making music?
- As I wrote to Luca who did the artwork, I was making the music at a time when everything around me was moving and changing in directions that I didn't choose myself. It was mid-pandemic, I'd lost all of my income,  and had decided to leave the city that I had lived in for 13 years (and loved at that time), not knowing if I'd be able to continue making music or not. Going to the studio to work on this was one of my few comforting things I could do, and sitting with it gave me a nice pause from that intense Weltschmerz I was feeling at the time.

Do you have a personal favorite longform piece of music?
- So many, I mean isn't that what DJ-mixes are for as well? A really well thought through DJ mix is something I appreciate so so much. And I want to mention everything from John Carroll Kirby, especially the Patience release. So good!

Resident Advisor and Absolut join forces to bring you round three of Alternate Cuts, an event series celebrating the UK crews that keep their local nightlife scenes thriving. For little or no return, these promoters work tirelessly to bring their communities together. To celebrate this, we’ve collaborated with three crews to ask some of their favourite artists to play alternative sets. They’ll be exploring corners of their record collections that rarely see the light of day, in some of the best intimate venues in the UK.

On Thursday 2nd May, we rounded off the 3rd series of Alternate Cuts with a trip to Sheffield's Yellow Arch Studios where local crew Pretty Pretty Good joined us to host Tama Sumo. The Panorama Bar veteran treated us to an expertly delivered selection of some beloved broken beat bombs, transporting us from the steel city to mid-00s London. She works tirelessly to push the music she loves, through her amazing Rinse France residency where she hosts some badass guests and shares tunes new and old from all across the spectrum; she also spreads the good word via her impeccably curated parties - the first time i played a weekend set at Dalston Superstore i was invited by her for the party Les Poppeurs that she co-ran (iconic name, just like her, i know). She delivered a wonderful naivetape, full of joyous house, groovy breaks, some voguey beats and italo vibrations - such a true one. A party i wish i could attend if there ever was one tbh.
