Mesh Series 016: Kinn

A curated series where we commission artists to make an hour long mix of whatever inspires them to experiment, produce, and what they listen to.

The mix extracts highlights from Kinn's debut album, Anamnesis Landscape, and expands on his favoured themes and aesthetics of the macabre, presented at times with a tongue in cheek “Dread turned up all the way to 11” fashion.

Using extracts of dialogue, these fragmented conversations evoke a subjective narrative, each monologue lingers in the imagination of the listener as they are juxtaposed or mirrored by the brooding drones and fleeting moments of respite. Thanks again to Kinn for contributing to this months series.

"Jack Aldridge (who took the photo) is one of my oldest friends, someone I haven’t seen in person in a very long time due to the pandemic. For this reason I asked him to work with me on “something” around the same time this mix for Mesh came about Whilst I was putting the final touches to the mix I asked him to send over a few photos, without any context, I was just interested to catch up with what he was working on, out of the few dozen photos he sent I became transfixed on this image, the content has no immediate grand concept and yet it’s ambiguity had possessed me. Listening through the finished mix now, the sound and the image have become one, the narrative they evoke together
is expansive and personable, I would hope this is an expectation of listeners of my chin-stroke-type-beat music anyway, to sit and stare into space and let their mind wander, perhaps to places they wouldn’t normally be comfortable to explore" - Kinn

isolatedmix 126 - Saphileaum

This song was created as part of the School of Song's songwriting workshop with Brian Eno.

The challenge for me for this piece was how to translate the idea of revolution or the emotion behind it into sound without lyrics. I went down several different pathways, first trying to record vocal samples to use as textures to build something very hopeful and uplifting, but that did not pan out the way I had hoped. After that, I tried going down a darker route, trying to channel the dire and consequential feeling of our current time into sound. I think I will revisit the idea of making a more hopeful and uplifting piece next time, but this is what I ended up with for now.

This patch uses some sampled percussion sounds, leads from Forge Time Vhikk X and Make Noise Mysteron, as well as a heavily processed vocal sample drone. Effects are Intellijel Sealegs, Make Noise Mimeophon, and Noise Engineering Desmodus Versio.
