The Wolf You Feed

Written May 28, 2016 for the Songwriting Game. Prompt: "WOLVES" 

Lyrics: 
It’s Saturday, hey, it’s my day off
And I am screening phone calls
From pencil-grinding debt collectors
Those fickle wolves with big calculators

And I fell asleep watching wrestling again
Made nary a dent in 600 pages
And on the federal stage I am just a grain of sand
With a small economy left to pay

Maybe someday soon I can tell them to fuck off
Go make their calls to some other guy
Otherwise they’ll follow me wherever I roam
Taking minimum payments til I die

I read an interview last night with a young novelist
Who just sold his debut for seven figures
I recognize the death knells of the novices
But I cannot wrap my head around that sum

With a spring in my step I plan to keep
Ready to punch some wolves in their teeth

Debt Collectors

As I lay in your arms every night
Wide awake till the warm morning light
I can tell by the smile on your face
That you're dreaming of warm summer days

When we would ride our bikes and play
Until the sun went down and our moms call our names

Sometimes when I feel the breeze
As I stand outside beneath the trees
I look up, enchanted by the leaves as they blow
And some nights when I feel the need
I'll go stand outside beneath the trees
And I'll watch the lightning bugs all eve as they glow

As we walk through the warm summer rain
Not a reason at all to complain
I believe that we're happier now
Than the gods, and that fate should allow

And it just gets better from here
We just hold hands and all our problems disappear

And when the stars shine down on me, and illuminate your face
I remember when we would sneak, out to look at the Milky Way
And we would formulate our dreams, nothing could stand in our way
And our problems seemed so small, as they'd all melt away

We were in a dead heat, to see who gets drunk first
I knew that I was dead meat you’re so well rehearsed
I don’t want to play this game, I don’t want to feel the shame
One more drink to say goodnight, one more drink to make it right

Your lights are on but no one’s home
Can you talk to me or just play on your phone
Your glass is empty and the stars being to shine
I wanted to get lost but you just wanted some wine

Lately
I’m living in a dead heat
It started with a tiny spark inside of me.
The fire grew so quickly, now I’ve lost control
It burns my soul.

Lately
I know my words, yet I can’t speak.
My inner dialogue recites like poetry
but, for every thought I’d like to say, a tear rolls down my cheek
my voice is rendered incomplete

So I’ll stay as quiet as a mouse so no one will hear me.
