Echo Chamber opens with the hammering of a single note like Morse code. It’s a melodic plaint driven by a syncopated piano rhythm that creates a mesmerizing robot-like vibe. Fitting, as this song intended for an AI character in a scifi musical co-written by long-time musical collaborators Kele Fleming & Ron Yamauchi. Some say that social media is the ultimate echo chamber - it connects us with like-minded people while blocking divergent viewpoints. This can do tricky things to our sense of reality & truth, not to mention self image.

Canadian composer, sound designer & alternative artist Atlas to Earth breathes new life into one of Canadian folk-rock singersongwriter Kele Fleming’s signature songs ‘Vanishing of Bees.’ He pollinated this remix with his trademark intensely electronic, darkly atmospheric synthwave flair while staying true to the song’s key message. His mix features honeyed waves of synths that buzz in the "vanishing of bees" chorus & then full stops before the drops to give a sense of the bees "vanishing."

Working with Kele Fleming on another remix has been an absolute pleasure! For this remix I knew I wanted to capture the message of The Great Acceleration using a shift in tempo. As it builds towards the chorus drops after Kele sings “The Great Acceleration!”, the track drastically picks up in speed to signify the growth of human activity in our world. I look forward to seeing Kele’s messages thrive and hope people enjoy the track!

About the song
I wrote this song as series of metaphors for how we seek connection through technology, and, at the same time, what that technology does to us as we seek connection through it. The song was a way to express my discomfort with my own compulsion to seek connection and escape through technology.

The song is meant to bring the listener a sense of release from the modern alienation of our dependency on technology as a replacement for connection with life. Each one of us has a compassion machine. Somewhere to escape to, to get lost and leave behind the troubles of the world. It may take many forms – a religion or faith, a song on repeat, a video game, a bottle of wine, a show to binge-watch on Netflix. The compassion machine is a salve to the day-to-day grind & helps numb out the pain of disconnection in the modern age.

Where the Rivers Meet (Live)

I wrote this song while spending some time in the Kootenays in BC in the summer of 2019. I was in one of my favourite places on Earth and surrounded by towering mountains, breathless forests, cool lakes and rushing rivers. The song captures my love of the natural world. And, it’s a love song and wanting so badly to get another chance, and to do right with the one you love.

I was hearing so much at the time about the devastating fires in Australia and California. Like this year and every year since 2019, the fires were also raging in BC and other parts of Canada. We have had so many impactful and heartbreaking wildfire seasons in BC and sadly this trend is continuing year after year. In ‘Rivers’, there is an expression of grief and loss and a lament for how we are impacted by the marginalization and destruction of nature. My love of the landscape, mountains, rivers, and forests are ever-present here in the melody and the lyrics. And, it's a love song at heart...A call to action to make things right...wanting so badly to get another chance to make things right.

WTRM is one of the songs on my last album that deals with a sense of grief and loss in multiple ways/many layers. There’s the loss of the natural or the external world and the loss of the spiritual or internal human world. Our energy and spirits are impacted by the marginalization and destruction of nature. Everything is connected and we have experienced a loss of connection. The beauty we experience in the natural world is also reflected in us.

This song is also a call to action (as many of my songs are these days) to make things right NOW. Since writing this song, my perspective has shifted from one of grief and fear to action and urgent optimism. I am defiantly hopeful that we (the collective we) can start a revolution to slow down out of control bullet train of human civilization. I truly believe we can. And, I believe that love is the only revolution that this world needs.
