Ten years after his debut-album “Herbstlaub“ on CCO, german ambient composer Marsen Jules takes us to his “Empire of Silence“. An impressing soundtrack to the epic power and  beauty of nordic snow and ice-landscapes. Thereby he sounds even more elegiac, warm and romantic as ever before. This might be a result of a strict reduction to bittersweet symphonic string-sounds. Sounds which Jules elapses like a prism on the timeline and lets them meander on the slightly on the listeners eardrum. While others are still talking about “modern classic“, Jules is already moving on the particle-layer through the sound-continuum. Diving deeper into the sounds then ever before, he lets the frequencies mirror on the sound spectrum with an impressing precision. Actually there is not much space for “real“ silence on the album. Instead the epic sounds of “The Empire of Silence“ seem to unfold their archaic euphoria best at high volumes. An euphoria that carries everything away and occupies the whole space. For the track titles of the eight gems on this album Jules refers to different Words for snow in Inuit language, of which the legend says there are dozens. While the melancholic openers “penstla“ (the idea of snow) and “tlaslo“ (snow that falls slowly) still travel on soft ways, the album raises to its full euphoria with “kayi“ (drifting snow) and “skriniya“ (snow that never reaches the ground). With its epic magic the nine minute long “katiyana“ (night snow) thrills the listeners attention while “naklin“ (forgotten snow) brings a short inhale. The album finds its peak with the ecstatic glisandi of „chathalin“ (snow that makes a sizzling sound as it falls on water) and finds its finish in the beautiful and lofty “ylaipi“ (tomorrow´s snow). For everyone who is still not satisfied fully after this 55 minute journey through nearly endless stringlisandi, we recommend the 45-minute bonus track which comes as digital download with the cd version on bandcamp.

At first, Valiska's music sounds bare. A few unembellished notes, uncomplicated phrases, basic lo-fi effects. But go just past the first track of the album, and you begin to understand, that in simplicity, there lies an honest sound. Its humble entry to the scene, where such direct and unpretentious music comes with virtue, is very dear, sweet, and precious.

Throughout the eight pieces of the album, the Poland born and now Calgary (Canada) based composer works with a limited palette of a synth, some haunting voice, and remnants of their sound, recorded on a tape loop, which shows the signs of disintegration, warping, hissing, and crackling in its unyielding wail. Such sonic impermanence seeps through the mood of this entire album, reflecting melancholy, sorrow, and some hope. A captivating, charming, and magnetic work.

This track is taken off Valiska's upcoming album, titled On Pause, out on October 13, on Trouble in Utopia, a new London-based label founded by Francis Redman with an exploration of sound as a focus for the upcoming releases.

Together with the percussionist Samuli Kosminen, the founding members of múm, Gunnar Örn Tynes and Örvar Smárason, returned to the UM:LAUT stage to once again perform a splendid live score to “Menschen am Sonntag”, a masterpiece of silent film.

Orson Hentschel is a German composer and visual artist based in Berlin. He composes experimental electronic music, with influences ranging from classical minimalism to triphop and drone.

For his third studio album Orson Hentschel travels back to the past and into the future, combining both old and new sounds, merging analogue drum machines from the 60’s with modern synthesizer environments. Hentschel largely forgoes melodies in order to create space for drone alike and sustained tones within the lower bass frequencies as well as noisy electronics. Sometimes a beat is coming straight out of the box, like in „Steady State“ or „Ghost Echos“. Constant rhythms alternate with fragmented, overlapped or reversed ones, like on „Antigravity“ or „Walki Talki“.
For the rhythmical sound editing, Hentschel used the Watkins Copicat, an old tape echo, which was very popular back in the days and which amplifies the scratchy sounding characteristic of his rhythm machines. His overall vision is to create a futuristic vintage sound, which does not fit in any ordinary mould.

Since his latest album „Electric Stutter“ (2017), Hentschel’s musical exploration lasted almost two years and is closely linked with his real-world journey, moving from Düsseldorf to Berlin. After a musical lean period in Düsseldorf it was time to get new inspiration and to create a new working environment. Berlin turned out to be this new place to absorb positive energy and to regain a creative workflow. „Antigravity“ is the symbol for this creation period. It reflects his temporarily disconnected relation to music and his (old) environment.
