The somewhat nomadic Matt Karmil has been producing and DJing under many aliases and in many forms for years, but this year he looks set to emerge as one of the UK finest talents already receiving support form the likes of Axel Boman and Kompakt Records.

March sees Matt release his first EP of the year ‘So You Say (Dirty Tape Heads Mix) / Wheel’ on Tim Sweeney’s brilliant imprint Beats in Space. We first heard So You Say back in August during Tim Sweeny’s set at Flow Festival in Helsinki, Its a sweeping disco number that transforms into acid house heaven with a euphoric 303 bassline and hypnotic groove throughout, a true gem in every sense.

On its second release, the fresh label Eating Records, native of Brussels, embarks us on its most unlikely underground journey yet .The new project includes two beautiful tracks from the deep flows of house music, from the unfamous talented producer from Kiev, iO (MULEN). There s no point in trying to place iO or his music in some larger social picture. No need to talk about his intensive production. His successful releases can be found on imprints such as REJECTED (Joris Voorn), PROPAGANDA (Nastia), ELARUM and his own MULEN RECORDS which he started in 2012 and that released his stunning debut album within 2013. On FLUTES/CREEPS EP, he thrives on fantastic impossibilities including flutes and deep melodic basses. It is obvious that mister iO had a wonderful time making the two tracks. FLUTES comes up as victorious and gallant. It is an energizing shock full of curious noises, mesmerizing musical surprises, a real dancefloor track. CREEPS is discreet and dark, and remains beautifully deep. This track finds iO wrenching as much sweetness out of it as he possibly can, in return giving us our first indication that he is in a generous spirit. When this EP comes to an end, it feels like getting back from a good vacation: the last thing you want to do is re-enter the real world.

LA-based music company, Godmode, is known for taking way-left artists and bringing them slightly more to the center.  After breaking Shamir and Yaeji, the label is back with their latest signing, Channel Tres. Channel grew up in the Compton neighborhood of Los Angeles, and his music is a clear representation of the surly attitude of West Coast rap reimagined with the stylings of Detroit house. Fans of Galcher Lustwerk would be wise to check out this project. Similar to the NYC legend, Channel’s voice is effortlessly deep, expertly processed, and a perfect compliment to his deep, sultry instrumentals.

“Top Down” oozes swagger. While a Paranoid London-esque acid bassline rips through ethereal pads, Channel croons, “bet you ain't never heard shit like this from the block before.” He’s not completely wrong. While he’s not the first to champion a sound like this, he certainly has few modern peers. Aside from how dope the song is, I really appreciate the emphasis he places on individuality as an artist. He says, “never let the scene choose you. Never met a man this cool.” For me, it’s essential for a musician to be original, to believe in the uniqueness of their music, and to not conform to the standards set by a saturated scene. Going forward, I hope Channel sticks to his words. It’s not everyday you hear a debut this polished and full of a variety of influences. I’ll be waiting to hear these tunes at my NYC after-hours, but until then, I’m about to cut the top off my Saturn and slow-ride through Brooklyn. Here’s your invite.

Nicola Cruz re-visits his second album 'Siku', released earlier this year to widespread acclaim, with ‘Siku Reworks’. The release provides the listener with another perspective on the ‘Siku’ domain, one envisioned in different corners of the world; Argentina, the UK, and Japan to name a few.  In an effort to unlink the original material, Cruz has selected producers to re-work a designated song on 'Siku' according to their own style. Additionally, Cruz has chosen to re-record two tracks whose live versions have stuck with him throughout a year of constant touring.

   ‘Siku Reworks’ invokes a psychedelic view of the original material, Hermetics (R&S) provides deep atmospherics with his take on 'Obsidiana' and Nicola offers an acid-merengue-infused live version of 'Señor de las Piedras' alongside an infectious and club-ready re-work of live favourite 'Siete'. In some ways it's hard to define Nicola's sound, shaped by years of global touring, and every track here is unique and succeeds in breaking from the usual electronic music format in captivating fashion.
