Alone, not alone

Excited to announce the release of a new single which I composed exclusively for #PianoDay. This is music for a "Portrait of a Lady with a Fan" whom I found looking back at the artist with heartache in her eyes. I am not a painter, but this is what I saw.

I’m excited to spend this morning in a company of a new name to my ears in this constantly evolving, vibrant music scene. Although Chronos is officially a sophomore full-length album for this self-taught pianist, Johann Pätzold [his first was a record titled Minds out on Timezone in 2011], it is the first time I am presented with his stunning music, courtesy of InFiné. This Rostok-based (northern Germany) multi-instrumentalist and producer’s discography includes a few more self-released EPs and two more for the imprint, Monumentum (2017) and Odesea (2018), including compositions for Dior fashion shows and HBO programmes. But today I’m listening to Chronos, and premiering “Nothing Lost Yet” from this upcoming album, out on April 23rd. The piece, nearly halfway through the album, is a texture-rich cinematic journey, balancing elements of modern classical composition with an electronica momentum of the progression arc – if you listen closely you can hear influences of Trentemøller, Apparat, and Jon Hopkins in the mix. “Wide open spaces are filled with elegiac strings and reverberating electronic percussion, fine-tuned to the millisecond: everything is in the right place, making for a listening experience that is ultimately musical storytelling.” The background of the album is built on the composer’s real experience with the Syrian refugee crisis, musical activism, and the eventual nervous breakdown – all of which is left unspoken, yet still heard…

Whilst fine tuning the album I had to leave France in a hurry before the border closed, to get back to my home in Rostock, Germany. We then asked our InFiné label mate (Thomas) Toh Imago if he could build us some beats. His work improved the track and gave it a whole new polish. I’m so lucky that so many people helped me to get this album finished during the pandemic."

With this album, Glåsbird's 'A Sonic Expedition' draws to its close. It began at the North Pole, in the frozen waters of the Arctic Ocean and it ends at the South Pole, on the world's least populated continent; the ice-capped desolate grandeur that is Antarctica. It had been suspected that this land existed long before it had been discovered and many had died in their pursuit to find it. Some may even have died as a consequence of accidentally discovering it, through detoured voyages striking into glaciers.

The music here in Antarctica returns to Modern Classical, as the artist comes full circle. Echoes of 2019's debut album set in Greenland can be felt in places, as soaring violin and cello collide. However, these 8 tracks gather up the compositional and technical learning throughout the series, as Glåsbird looks forward to the challenges of the future.

The photography in this album is from Oceanographer Neha Ramsarup, who traveled on the South African polar vessel SA Agulhas II, deploying instruments and collecting seawater samples along the voyage from Cape Town (South Africa) to South African National Antarctic Expedition (SANAE IV). These trips are joined by a range of marine scientists, whose keen interests lie in ocean properties such as sea ice and weather as well as mammals, birds, whales and penguins who call these polar regions home.

This series of 8 albums has been a world of discovery for this anonymous composer, as their work etches into sound the hours of inspiration drawn from vintage maps, documentaries, Google Earth explorations and countless articles. Along the way, a familiar theme threads through the work as at every turn, Glåsbird's studies led to the events of climate change. The devastating effects are real, with melting glaciers, rising seas, disintegrating ice caps, wild fires, war and warming seas unintentionally finding their way into the concepts of this series.

As a clear juxtaposition to this, the sheer beauty of our world is also uncovered, with the work of visual artists helping bring this to life through the album covers and packaging imagery. There's an enormity and poignant feel to the music too, as melancholy classical notes extend through an eerie chill, or sun-bleached tapes explore hidden islands and tropical climes. The natural beauty of our world can be felt throughout this collection alongside a sense of despair too, at its apparent demise. Humans are doing what they can to build a momentum of awareness on our tired old planet, through education and urgency. It is hoped through this series that it can add to this movement somehow even if in a small way, to build a sense of care for our planet.

Moriarty has been a producer of House and Techno for almost twelve years. Since then his style has drastically changed, taking influence from the likes of Digitonal, Max Richter, Hans Zimmer and a host of other ambient and emotional Techno artists. 

Over the years, Chris's sound has taken a more dynamic and cinematic style, blending deep, textured soundscapes with rolling and bouncy techno aspects.

Tiny Leaves is the music of Joel Nathaniel Pike. He has developed his sound as a solo artist alongside years of writing and performing in bands. He describes his music as being rooted in narrative, but is often surprised at the undefinable end result. His music has a delicate, cinematic quality that brings a quiet hope.
