I discovered Frankie Knuckles through his music, one that was, gentle, lush with a subdued, understated power that rocked many a dancefloor.
I had the privilege to hear him once in the heyday of his legendary residency at Sound Factory Bar in New York. I was submerged, sonically and emotionally by the beauty of the music I heard that night. I remember very clearly saying to myself that this would be impossible to ever equal.
That was 20 years ago, and I never got to hear this magic combination again.

I got to meet Frankie a few times, and he was always like his music, gentle, humble,   yet naturally imposing

I've put together here some of my favorite music from him. So that his legacy can keep on inspiring other people.

Rest in peace, Frankie, may your music keep on moving people eternally

Solid Steel in association with Serato (1st May) We continue celebrating the relaunch of the Solid Steel website with the return of Four Tet and an exclusive mix alongside Anthony Naples for a TEXT Records special. Four Tet first appeared on Solid Steel back in 2001 and you can now hear this mix in the Featured section on the website, along with another mix from 2002 (which also featured Bonobo, DJ Food and DK as part of the Solid Steel Tour retrospective.) We also feature a 2001 mix from Koushik, who was the first artist to release an EP on Text Records.

 In Hour 2 we welcome Anthony Naples to to Solid Steel. His album Body Pill came out on TEXT Records recently and he has also released music on Mister Saturday Night, Rubadub and The Trilogy Tapes. Once again no track list, but a killer selection to kick start your weekend. This is what he told us;

Francis Harris and Anthony Collins air their Breakaway edits on an exquisite house session.

Since 2012, the New York-based pair have been honing their vision of deep house across a singles on the Scissor and Thread label and their residency at Brooklyn's The Panther Room, gaining the support of DJ Sprinkles in the process. Last year, they released their debut album You Go Girl, which stayed true to the duo's deep house foundations while also exploring dubbier sounds indebted to Basic Channel et al.

Frank & Tony's FACT mix is entirely made up of their own edits, of Mogwai, Herbert, Roedelius and more. "Over the past few years as our sets became more and more focused on a vinyl format", the pair explain, "when faced with non-working turntables, the turn to digital became more and more of a challenge for us. The vinyl we digitized never sounded quite as good and we both had little patience for searching for music with online shops, so most of the time we were playing our own cuts, which, after a while also became tedious."

"As a result, we started making dancefloor edits of music that really inspired us both artistically and personally. These have now become a central part of our DJ performances from the digital side of the spectrum. The list of edits is growing rather exponentially, so we felt that with this mix we would give a little glimpse into this recent approach in our sets. In a way, this mix is a bit of a list of "greatest hits" in our minds, culminating in the ultimate homage to one of the masters, Roedelius."

Grouper's never grooved quite like this, in other words.

Gilles Peterson DJ set - Precious Hall, Japan (5th Oct 2015)

Rrose—named after Marcel Duchamp's character, Rrose Selavey—is a dark and mysterious figure who makes dark and mysterious music. It comes mainly on his own Eaux label after early forays on the influential Sandwell District, and it combines mean and heavy overtones with more lithe and agile synths work. Most recently this American producer and live act served up an absorbing album of droning soundscapes on Seattle’s Further Records, whilst 2015’s EP output has seen him master supple techno forms drenched in reverb and soot black atmospheres.   This deep, thick and industrially influenced sound carries over in to his live set, and that is exactly what we are serving up for you on our next podcast. 

This one hour session is an absorbing one that sucks you deep down a blackened rabbit hole. It is one that recreates his show at this year's Dekmantel Festival and across the course of an hour invites your mind to get lost in elongated synth lines that slowly drift about like planets in orbit. Occasional percussive patterns and crunchy textures get loosely scattered across the airwaves and along the way the brooding clouds break to let in some blissful rays of optimism. There are few who have a sound as focussed and singular as this, as this podcast proves.

UK artist Lone emerged on a wave of rave nostalgia and computer game sound effects back in 2009. His earliest albums and EPs were like juicy peaches with reflective and refracted stabs making for succulent party sound tracks. Since then he has emerged with a new direction on each new album, his latest being full of jungle and hardcore tropes that cannot fail to make you move. As well as releasing on Werk Discs, he has made R&S his home and has become a real jewel in the underground’s crown.

As such it is a real treat to have a specially recorded mix from him, and one that gives us a hint at where he is at musically right now. Featuring four brand new Lone cuts as well as unreleased material from Ross From Friends and Gnork, his selections are decidedly deep and seductive with bumpy house and deconstructed grooves the order of the day.
