Searching for their stride in self-expression, the Detroit-based songwriter and producer Grayskale has been steadfastly exploring the wide array of bass music styles and rhythms across his time as a public-facing musician. With a clear attraction to clarity and structure, his humble catalog already displays a munificent bounty of production knowledge and compositional finesse. Consequently, The Rust is incredibly excited to premiere the namesake single to his forthcoming first album, String Theory.

“String Theory” is a distinctly narrative stroll, fusing a focused message with syncretic sound design. The first half of the track features a whimsical orator giving us the foundational argument of string theory, parallel to the gradual rise in chord progressions and swelling percussive rides in the background. At the track’s midway point, it cleverly dovetails into a staccato dance of pulsing low end and flighty melodies. At it’s apex, “String Theory” displays the blissful colorways capable when bass music is designed to be particularly rich in harmonics and fidelity, and has us eagerly awaiting the full dive into the String Theory LP.

In a bid to start the new off with a righteous groove, The Rust is especially excited to host his newly minted EP, Squid Pro Quo. 

Tight, pinpoint percussion dominates the runtime of Squid Pro Quo, serving as the consistent foundation for his rhythmic and melodic arrangements. Taking clear advantage of his time as a drummer, it’s simultaneously the backbone and foreground of the EP, with each hit taking up generous sonic bandwidth. Each track flares with an alternate series of forward and laid back attitudes while keeping the focus squarely on kinetics; splices of throaty synthesis mingle with staccato lead lines and harmonized chord plucks, closing the distance between hard hitting neuro motifs and pronounced songwriting fundamentals. There’s an almost liquid quality to the EP’s engineering, producing a listening experience that is as hygienic as it is engaging, and betraying a significant dedication to cleanliness as well as design. From a dimly lit cave in Austin's own underground, Joseph Roberts, aka “Detox Unit”, has been cooking up his own blend of futuristic frequencies for the past 4 years. His aim, to make the imagination run wild; to tickle the brain in impossible ways. Originally hailing from New York, Joseph spent his childhood tinkering with old radios and building computers, fascinated bu the near endless possibilities that they presented. Inspired by artists such as Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Monolake, and Luke Vibert, he picked up a copy of Ableton Live and a myriad of synthesizers and hasn't left his cave since. Now 4 years later Detox Unit has become a familiar and loved name in the Austin experimental music scene known for his intricately woven sets and unique productions.
