Nobody knew too much about Krywald & Farrer when their email landed in our Gmail accounts late earlier this month. They’ve earned their stripes, yes. Their residencies at a number of London’s clubs tell us that story. But today’s debut tells us that they clearly just get a kick out of smushing genres together.

“The People’s Asafo” sees warm house textures flirt with an infusion of Ghanaian beatwork for eight minutes. A coaxing leg-shaker if there ever was one. It arrives on March 30th (via Silver Bear Recordings) and backed by B-side “He’s The Chief” which continues the afrocentric theme with gusto.

Cosmo Vitelli's label I'M A CLICHÉ might have run pretty low-key to the eyes of some but during its 12 years of activity, it managed to display a very clear artistic direction strong of 70 releases with a much enviable sonic cohesion while have a fine nose for talent: among other proud achievements, the label hatched the career of Israeli super-duo Red Axes and released Azari & III's "Hungry For The Power" 6 months before it became a worldwide classic.
A dozen years during which the label's tastes bended more and more towards a very peculiar type of synth pop and synth wave, too.

This year will see the release of a few retrospective compilations, each exploring the main traits and moods of its vast catalog.
The first one, "10 TRACKS THAT MIGHT HELP YOU FOR COOKING BUT WOULD CLEAR THE DANCEFLOOR" is obviously not touching I'M A CLICHÉ's arsenal of club weapons.
It's fair to say most of the music here either displays a feel of in-betweenness, or menace and tension—not unlike preparation scenes from a heist movie.

Cosmo Vitelli rounded up a selection spanning over the last decade, from UNCLE O's skeletal beats to ETIENNE JAUMET's modular synth jam, from ENTERTAINMENT's droning melodies and warehouse-reverberating drums to DIRTY 30's (actually Alixander III from Azari & III) twisted jazz-funk-leaning disco, the misty psychedelia of RED AXES' "Dreams Like A Tale". 

It's also a look back at COSMO VITELLI's own discography, through his 2006 single "Delayer" here remixed by Quiet Village over 10 minutes and two tracks from his band BOT'OX' second album (2013), all linked by the idea that escapism can somehow be a modern affair too. Here and now.

Bot'Ox — "Fathers And Sons"

Pablo Bolívar, this time releasing under his alias Mind Groove, begins 2017 following the canons with this album, in which he pays tribute to his homeland, Cantabria. In fact, the 10 tracks included in this long play were initially written in his hometown, between the sea and the mountains, between the blue and green. 

‘The sailor and the mountain’ is perhaps, the most special and sensible job within the ambient boundaries of Pablo Bolívar aka Mind Groove, having already published mixes since 1999, adding a different dimensión to the tracks released under his alias Pablo Bolívar, more oriented to Deep, house and club sounds. Therefore, the release comes together with a wonderful tale, written by X. Balboa, in which a finnish sailor plays the main character. It should be read slowly and carefully, while listening to the tracks in the album. This way, the merely musical and geographical aspects transcend towards a wider, rounder, almost perfect experience. 

‘The sailor and the mountain’ is a trip around the sound and vital bowels of Mind Groove. From the first track to the last one, the deep, spiritual and emotional character of his bet are truly noticeable. The content of the album is escapist, ambient oriented, extremely downtempo, naturalistic and truth-spreading. The eleven cuts included in the present record develop around a wild Winter-tale atmosphere .’The last dreamer’ (feat.García Smith), ‘Natikha’ and ‘Shadows’ seem –from its honest composition- to stop the time; whereas ‘Tigers come at night’ takes us to a more luminous place, which at times seems softly clubby. The slight lowness of the piano in ‘Inside you’ (feat. Pablo Bolívar) contrasts with the friendly, fragile and twilight touch of tracks such as the one naming the album, and in which Manuel Obeso has collaborated. Delightful and intimate, in any case.
