Haven is a place of safety, warmth, and comfort. 


Something a little different from my last few mixes - many of you know me for faster uptempo club mixes, but I also love and dig a lot of slower hypnotic tracks since I started DJing in 2007. I wanted to make a paced-out mix that I could really sink into and feel safe to tap into states of intimacy and warmth.

This mix was recorded on July 26 during one of Clara Tatjana and I's long music sessions in my studio. We were jamming to tunes and she contributed many awesome selections to the tracklist <3

With the current wave of lockdowns and many gig cancellations, I thought it fitting to share this feeling as we all incubate for the next.

X-Coast delights us this episode with a sonic journey on the border between imagination and reality. Combining the warm chords and vocals of classic house music witht the pace and punch of trance, this young artist has found a sound that feels both new and oddly familiar, both tried and tested as well as innovative. This "riviera groove"  simultaneously encapsulates the rawness of night life as well as the laid-backness of island existence. X-coast has managed to combine these seemingly opposed feelings into a distinct and recognizable musical approach that is entirely his own. X-Coast is simply a vibe.

Whether you're hearing a track or a DJ set, you can usually tell it's Nene H pretty quickly. In just a few years, Beste Aydin has developed a very specific approach within the realm of techno. She inhabits the genre yet colours just enough outside the lines without losing the plot—or the pull—entirely. The focus is on fun, on groove and on hooks, with sets that dip into trance, electro, ghetto house and even hints of hyperpop, tying in neon threads into techno's all-black garb. 

She's used techno as a jumping off point for orchestral and choral performances, as well as the poignant expression of grief (on her stellar debut album). She's become a regular at Berghain and groundbreaking festivals like CTM, traversing a highbrow-lowbrow line that posits that every kind of dance music deserves the highbrow treatment. Her RA Podcast is an irresistible hour of techno full of what she calls "Neneisms," turns into pop hooks amidst hulking techno beats and dips into funky, electro-informed beats.

This week’s DETECT comes from one of our own. @teecra opened our UNFOLD XL edition four weeks ago from our Second Room, and we bring you this today. 

Teecra’s presence is most visible at UNFOLD either at the entrance or the floor, yet she also plays a big part helping behind the scenes, from our communications to our marketing.

Years of organising house and drum & bass raves in North London gradually introduced her to techno, and these influences are still felt today in the bouncy, positivity exerted by the music she plays.

Her own drive in life comes from a desire to demonstrate that trans people come in many forms - that there is no one way to be trans. 

For her UNFOLD XL opening set Teecra initially delves into trance, dub and percussion, before ramping up the energy and exploring the many varied grooves of techno. This DETECT can now be heard on our FOLD SoundCloud.

The other day we met with our friends Jesse (@jessekave) and Theo (@theolh96) [Raketa95]  in Theo’s ballet studio in Anenské Náměsti. We are counting down the days until our season closing where they will be joining us, but in the meantime, they have shared with us a set for our hereandthere podcast series. 

Raketa95 is the duo project of Prague’s power couple Theo and Jesse. Locked at home during the COVID lockdown, the couple spent their time digging through music and mixing. It wasn’t long until they felt quite comfortable playing together, gliding between various genres, and always with high energy.

Explorers is the title of the new format from our good friend and simply stunning Paul Krause aka DJ Spit, aimed at open-minded and contemporary audiences who are ready to embrace and discover its motto of > genre-fluidity <. DJ Spit himself, undoubtably one of Germany’s current dance music shooting stars, is an avid promoter of genre-defying mixes and selections with a focus on high-energy bass-music hybrids that recalibrates the perception of what you’d call > Rave < through styles like Drill, Drum&Bass, Ghetto House and much more. Dashing through myriads of genres and styles and different forms of musical abstraction, DJ Spit makes big pop-gestures and experimental polyrhythms seem like close relatives in the blink of an eye.

And the rendition of Explorers at Blitz on Friday 10/02 could hardly be more exciting, with a thrilling array of acclaimed DJs sharing decidedly modern and multifaceted perspectives on club music, such as Bjarki, I. Berlin queer party Herrensauna—which means "men's sauna" in German—started as a seed of an idea shared between friends Cem Dukkha (AKA CEM) and Nicholas Endlicher (AKA MCMLXXXV). They were teenagers in Vienna at the time, dreaming of becoming DJs in Berlin. When they finally relocated, they started throwing parties in the basement of a Neukölln off-location. This quickly snowballed into a residency at Tresor, and now a globally recognised brand that curates lineups at clubs and festivals around the world and counts Salome, SPFDJ, Héctor Oaks, JASSS and DJ Saliva as residents.

In this RA Exchange, hosted ahead of Herrensauna's curated night at Wire Festival in New York, CEM and MCMLXXXV spoke with senior producer Chloe Lula about the party's origins and how its mission has changed, shifting from focusing on gay men to championing an all-inclusive vision of queerness. They also discussed their artwork and aesthetics—including their provocative re-appropriations of quasi-religious iconography—as well as the role that platforms like theirs have in shifting the cultural zeitgeist and attitudes towards the LGBTQIA+ community.
