The much-awaited follow-up by Ex Batallion to their uber succesful single “Hayaan Mo Sila” is coming from an unlikely place. Unlikely because who would’ve thought that the boys of Ex Batallion – Bosx1ne, Skusta Clee, Flow-G, Brando, Emcee Rhenn, and King Badger—would be writing a whole EP’s worth of new tracks for a movie, or much more, appear in said movie? But that’s what S.O.N.S. Sons of Nanay Sabel (Original Movie Soundtrack) is all about. Six brand new tracks from that the Ex B wrote and recorded for the their debut movie that they’re starring on alongside comedienne Ai-Ai Delas Alas.

There’s variety here; from the easy flow of piano-decked ermat-dedication in “pagMAMAhal.” To funky guitar drenched “Maghihintay (Romantic Lovesong)” that Ex-B executes with old-school Pinoy rap panache. To the R&B-tinged “Saya (Anong Magpapasaya Sa Yo)” that demonstrates the group’s knack for catchy rhymes and melodies.

Even Ai-Ai gets lyrical with the hook-filled rap-pop lead track “Bagong Simula.” And while “Sama-Sama” sticks out like the perfunctory “theme song,” there are tracks here that their fans can really sink their teeth into. And just to jar us out of our listening comfort zones, Ex-Batallion throws us a curve ball like “Wag Sya.” New Orleans jazz horns, pianos, rap and that unmistakeable Pinoy twist that results in a tasty rap pop gumbo and we get totally get it!
