i heard snatches of television dialogue
"stop that car", "i wouldn't do that, Jim"

after that, the howling of a dog...
rising effortlessly, in perfect misery
then, i thought i heard a plane
then silence... and i was happy

a garden's silence is made of sounds:
press your ear to a tree and listen
the sounds may be within us;
i'd rather think it's the tree

the silence is broken by an alien noise,
disturbing my peace
i close the window, but the noise persists;
it's too much for me 

i don't want useless sounds; i want to select them
voices and words... there are so many words i'd rather not hear

but you must resign yourself,
like floating on the waves of the sea



once there was a girl on an island
she was bored with grownups who scared her
she didn't like boys all pretending to be grown up
so, she always alone

she had found a little isolated beach
where the sea was transparent
and the sand pink
she loved that spot
nature's colors were so lovely
and there was no sound

who was singing?
everything was singing
everything

if i were to leave and never to return
i'd take you with me
because you are a part of me now
you are a part of everything

i'd like everyone who's ever cared about me
here around me now
like a wall
