Heroin thrives among the Young, the Hip, and the Privileged

"Heroin was like a god taking me in the arms and making everything in my body all right, better than all right. And for one time in my life I got what I deserve. Now you start to thinking you deserve it every day. Sometimes twice a day."
Not only is there more heroin in Memphis, but the heroin has reached a dangerous level of purity.
"I was good at keeping my addiction down until the new heroin came along," says one recovering heroin addict at the Memphis Mental Health Institute. "Before the tar [a potent form of injectable heroin], it took $500-$600 worth. With the tar, it only takes $200 or so, it's so pure."
The purer the heroin, the less of it a user needs to get high. In the last few months, police have confiscated heroin that is 70 to 75 percent pure, compared to the 4 to 5 percent confiscated 10 years ago. The threat of overdosing increases with the purity. Also, dealers can "step on" heroin more times by mixing it with various substances, such as baking soda and vitamin B12, in order to maximize their profits.
"The heroin now makes the stuff I used look like over-the-counter aspirin," says Herman Holmes, an addiction counselor at Charter Lakeside Behavioral Health System and former heroin addict. On the average, about 10 to 25 percent of patients in the 30-bed facility admit they're being treated for heroin. Holmes suspects as many as 20 percent more may use heroin, but say they're addicted to Dilaudid or another narcotic to escape the "heroin stigma."
For $20, a user can buy a hit of powdered heroin that can be snorted or injected into a vein. A gram goes for $200-$300. The powdered form allows users to bypass the needle, as well as the threat of being infected with HIV or hepatitis through intravenous drug use. But after becoming addicted, users almost always resort to shooting up. The introduction of heroin directly into a vein ("mainlining") provides an instantaneous rush.

Heroin laid its foundation in American culture in the 1940s and early '50s jazz scene. A slew of jazz players, including bebop king Charlie Parker, became well-known heroin junkies as the drug saturated urban black communities. When Parker died at age 34, the coroner guessed he was in his fifties.
"Dope is everywhere in rock-and-roll and there's nothing wrong with that,"

Cocaine is a powerful and generally illegal drug that has a long and complicated history.

The intoxicant is extracted from the coco plant, which originated in the Andean highlands of South America. Natives chewed the leaves or brewed them into a tea to combat fatigue for thousands of years before the Spaniards arrived on their doorstep. The pure chemical of cocaine hydrochloride was first extracted in the mid 1800s, and it was popular for both medical and legal recreational use for decades after.

In the early 1900s, medical professionals began to become alarmed at the negative health effects and addictions associated with this miracle powder, and its recreational use became illegal in 1914. Medical use is still legal in some circumstances, but it’s highly restricted.

Cocaine use dwindled for many years following this regulation, but a market for the drug exploded in the 1970s and 1980s, devastating communities. Soon after this, a new, cheaper form of cocaine emerged called crack cocaine that was more accessible to low-income individuals. More susceptible to drug abuse and addiction, many of these communities became trapped in a cycle of poverty, gang violence, and addiction. Today, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 1.4 million Americans struggle with cocaine abuse and addiction, though its general use appears to be on the decline.
