The first track means a lot to me because two years ago my parents passed away within two weeks of each other due to cancer. It happened quickly between mid-August and the end of August. This was the saddest time in my life. I was struggling with myself, with the world, with everything. After a few months, I decided to translate my emotions into a song. I wrote this song for them but I was never able to finish it. It felt like I had "overproduced" it and was missing that special something. My good friend told me, "Michael, don't think about the project for a period of time. Sometimes, something will happen when you don't expect it to."

After nine months it was Christmas and we did a let's say a "corona confirm" dinner party. My good friend Basch invited Robert (Owens). Since Basch's mother and Robert are from the same town and maybe the same street in Detroit, they've been connected to each other for the past 30 years!

Robert came to the dinner party and it was synergy. I told him the story and about the missing elements for the song. He listened to it after dinner and said, "okay where is your studio?" After the Xmas dinner party, we went to my studio where we recorded the vocals. Robert did it on the fly and all friends in the studio cried tears as if there was some kind of magic in the air.

Since then, we are working together on something special. It's blossomed into a friendship we both enjoy.

The journey ends in London with my all-time favorite Label Fingerlickin Records. I requested a Remix from the Plump DJs and Jem Stone. Both agreed and the results are making this record unique.

The Plump DJs Remix is a UK Breakbeat-Chord-Style groove monster.

Jem Stone's version is an emotional journey that cannot be explained in words…

The chance to remix a track with the inimitable voice of Robert Owens? Probably like you this voice has been a soundtrack to my clubbing life: so evocative, illustrious, definitive, so damn soulful.

Fast forward three whole decades since first hearing I’ll Be Your Friend and a chap who I know to be a huge @finger_lickin_records fan gets in touch scouting for a remix, but this is different, it really moved me… This is a track laden with emotion, and has a story to boot. TMPLT has a painful tale of love and loss, both his parents had succumbed to cancer almost at the same time and his world was turned upside down. He was not looking for sympathy, he sends me a groove that is so loaded with heart and soul my hairs stood up.

And the story goes that Robert Owens felt it too, compulsively adding his voice and lyrics on Christmas Day last year to a deep silky breaks riff that amazingly and beautifully considers personal bereavement and heartbreak. When I heard it I immediately wanted to express my vision/version, channeling my own experience of love and loss. No beats. Joy. Sorrow. Inner warmth and healing.

By great coincidence it was first released on Beatport (my debut in the Organic House/Chill Out Chart, in at no.26!) on my father’s birthday, 24th September - he lost his battle with cancer 30 years ago this month, so there is extra resonance for me. And then I discovered it was Michi TMPLT’s late father’s birthday too. And now I hear the full release date, October 8th, is incredibly by chance, his mother's birthday. It was meant to be!

My old muckers @plump_djs have also remixed and beautifully conveyed the soul, emotion and vibe in a typically pumping capacity the way only they know how. What package, what a feeling. Very proud to be part of this.

DIGITAL ATTITUDE MIAMI ELECTRO BASS

While working this last week I had a continuous playlist on YouTube automatically select the first couple LTJ Bukem's Progression Session mixes. Listening to those mixes again (after a really long time) totally brought me back to that mid to late 90s period when atmospheric (or "intelligent drum & bass" as it was known back then) was really cutting edge stuff. I have such fond memories of that period of time — going record shopping and playing my first big boy raves... Anyway, long story short, that spell of nostalgia made me go digging through my Rekordbox collection for suitable tunes to try to recreate that heady, spacey, blissful vibe on the stream this week, albeit with as current as possible tunes.

A large section of the first hour is all classic sounding atmospheric with that chunky drum programming. Some jazzy and funk-influenced bits thrown in there too... From there it moves into hour two with some drumfunk roller energy before slipping into "endless summer" liquid vibes featuring a nice section of classic amen rollers; some old, some new. I kept playing a bit longer again this week, since my boy Dough who usually follows me was still out of commission. Ended with some of my favorite deep soulful cuts. I had lots of fun playing this week. Big shouts to the LLL chat crew for keeping it lively!
