Episode 05: Porter Brook

Following an extended break from our podcast series, we are very happy to return with another deep dive, this time expertly curated by Porter Brook. Taking his name from one of Sheffield’s great rivers, his sound and ethos is rooted in the Steel City - where the juxtaposition of a decaying post-industrial landscape against the vibrancy of a city at one with its neighbouring National Park has shaped a creative and expansive sound. Further refining his work with fresh influences from his current residence in Leipzig, Porter Brook walks the line between the clubland and the esoteric, showcased by a string of great releases on the likes of GROUNDWORK, Electroménager, and Trule.

Our first encounter with Porter Brook was at one of our most infamous early Motif parties in Leeds, a night that we find ourselves still reminiscing about to this day. We have since followed his career with keen interest, most recently witnessing the launch of the ‘Second Born’ imprint of which he is co-runner and debut artist with his EP ‘Prefrontal Asymmetry’.

We’re therefore delighted to have him deliver episode five of `What Lies Beyond’ - presenting a mix of deep, tripped out percussions and rich textures. Both hypnotic and playful, this rhythmic delight is both infectious and immersive.

“You could buy a Jungle record and walk out with a sampler to make your own Jungle record” – for over three decades, @rubadubdist has stood as a cornerstone of Glasgow’s vibrant music scene, carving out a reputation as both a beloved hub for vinyl enthusiasts and a trusted source for pioneering music equipment.

Since its inception in 1992, Rubadub has been more than just a record shop. It has become a cultural institution, fostering creativity, innovation, and an enduring sense of community in the heart of Scotland’s largest city. Initially rooted in the burgeoning sounds of underground dance music, Rubadub quickly became synonymous with genres like techno, house, dub, and experimental electronica. The shop has consistently championed independent artists and labels, showcasing an eclectic mix of records that cater to both seasoned DJs and casual listeners alike.

“i wanted to create something with a sense of anticipation, rising out of the deep building the listener up into a sense of relief as more functional and 4/4 forward takes heed like warming up a dancefloor. with so many influences i feel like my ideas can feel convoluted when planning and recording a mix but this i really took my time to move through different styles whilst them all being connected by a deep & trippy style which gels the mix together.” 

a heads down session from london-based dj, producer and label owner dyslecta who delivers this week’s 909 mix. a mix filled with tension, swirling rhythms and wonked-out drum patterns - it’s a masterclass in building pace and letting the restraint lock you in before the heaviness is unleashed. 

from the rolling fields of east yorkshire to the thrum of london’s dancefloors, dyslecta’s story is stitched together by tapes, family lore, and a deep, instinctive relationship with sound. raised on a steady diet of hardcore, techno, and trance blasting from his parents’ rave collections, his earliest encounters with electronic music were less about clubs or community than about atmosphere. his productions and mixes channel that same sense of place and texture: raw, shape-shifting worlds built from fragments of loops, hardware experiments, and a visual imagination that maps sound to colour, rhythm to landscape. with his label tenuous links, launched earlier this year, dyslecta continues to expand on this vision, with an aim to champion artists who thrive on curiosity and experimentation. 

in the interview below dyslecta talks about the constant learning and experimentation of being an artist, how growing up in yorkshire influenced his sound, and the process behind his productions - from starting with a sound to creating an atmosphere or world with it and being able to visual and feel the track he’s working on.
