how to pretend

For a minute now @jorodudovski has been at the forefront of contemporary drum and bass’ secretive radicality. Because something seemed to happen where, while particular subsets of jump-up and liquid pursued either a repetitious detumescence of build-up/drop structures or a satiation in ambiences of pervasive dullness, a number of producers saw these formulae of DnB as fertile for an objective deconstructivism, translating a schema of amounting flaccidity and its innately futuristic sonics into an increasingly strange music. This is where we might find Joro Dudovski. Incredibly prolific, Joro’s tunes interpolate elements of hyperglitch, ambient, riddim, sound-collage and dubstep. Essentially there are two alluring characteristics, a voracity wherein bass music is not seen as static but instead capacious enough to incorporate an atmospheric intertextuality, giving a greater expanse to the worlds this music may then visualize. And, secondly, that when we then get to the drops, there is a violent otherworldliness. I rarely feel Joro has made a track for it go off in a rave. His drops instead sound like visualizations of a twain horror and imagination that is not of our world but somehow adjacent to it. His music is fantastical in the same sense that it is a demarcation of the possibilities of human music-making.

JD’s Realist mix is a tabulation of these quietly experimental electronics. In the tracks are tinctures of jersey, baile funk, industrial and brostep. It operates as a record of an ongoing chartering. It is euphoric in the way perhaps bass music, with its half-identifiable humanities, its mesh of the drum’s skewwhiff emotionality and the buried blatancy of its voices, can be. Which is euphoric in its briefness, anthemic in disappearance, a euphoria laden with incertitude and faith. But Joro’s mix doesn’t end in the comfort of the anthemic. Instead we conclude with burrowing, unfamiliar, seizing breaks and dissonant percussion. It is reminder that this is not merely about feeling, but the demonstration of a continuing excavation and what might be found in its undiscovered earth.
