Equilibrium Dizrupted (spelled that way on purpose) is a semi-comedic random role AU made as a tribute to the late Zeno DePaolo, a wonderful friend of mine who was taken from this world far too soon. It exists in part to show how funny it would be if all of his eccentric interests were combined, and also as a way to hopefully shed some light on what I loved about him so much, so that maybe some of you out there can maybe get a bit of appreciation for him. I want to make sure he is fondly remembered by as many people as possible, even those who never knew him to begin with. In the descriptions of each track I will give some anecdotes on his connection to that particular property that show a bit about who he was as a person.
As for the story, basically he and all of his interests are abruptly thrown together into a shoddily-made world, and prophecies foretell of Zeno's harvested SOUL being the key to the world's liberation.

Sans takes the role of Annoying Dog. His secret lab is the "dog shrine." Not much to be said about Sans's presence. He's just kinda...there. Vibin.

I don't usually like putting Undertale characters in random role AUs, but it would be criminal not to include some representation of Undertale itself somewhere in an AU about Zeno. This game changed his life. Like seriously, he might be the only person I know who was more affected by the game than I was. In one of the last things he ever wrote, he spent a lot of time talking about how much of an impact the game had on him. It made him see a new beauty in the world. It showed him a certain beauty to human compassion that I don't think he had fully grasped before. There was a time when he was younger where I think he was resigned to just being a colder loner type. But this game brought out a softness in him he wasn't comfortable accepting before then, and he was a much better friend because of it. It made him a guiding light kind of friend, the kind of friend you could come to about anything because you knew he would have the empathy and compassion to understand.
As for Undertale itself, I think Sans was his favorite character. He wasn't a Sans-centric "HAHA BAD TIME" type person by any means, and he had love for each and every character, but I think Sans just happened to be his favorite. The idea of hiding a world of existential sadness behind a funny facade was something he could definitely connect with.

On this channel we schedule our uploads in advance. When this goes up, I (Slick) won't be present. While this goes up, I will be at Zeno's burial. Well, sort of.
Zeno was a staunch environmentalist and cared deeply about the planet and what we're doing to it. Environmental science was his college major, and that wasn't a throwaway choice either. Dude was really smart and cared a lot about the planet.
He was cremated upon his passing. In line with his wishes, his urn is biodegradable. On April 17, 2021, after his mother has held onto it for nine months, the urn will be buried under a tree on his family's Vermont property. That way, even posthumously he can give back to the earth. It's going to be a powerful emotional ceremony, and while I won't be online to distract myself from the pain I at least want some tribute to go up for him in my temporary absence. What can I say, I'm just...like that.

The motif is "Four Tears at a Time," an original being written by myself and my friend Aaron as part of a tribute to him.

On the subject of the AU itself, this has nothing to do with the Asgore replacement. This is just because Zeno himself is Frisk/Chara, and the song is about him passing away.

There are a lot of memories from our friend group that I will always treasure. Experiences that brought us all closer as friends. The things that really got me through high school, even when I was at my lowest. Most of those memories involve us indulging in stupidity in some way or cringing at something absolutely repulsive. Among those memories is, in the dark of night, watching the Star Wars Holiday Special in our friend Eric's basement. In case you've never seen it for yourself: yes. It IS as bad as people say it is. I had to check with Zeno and Eric the following day to make sure the accursed movie wasn't just some fever dream I conjured. I remember Zeno in particular being...particularly perturbed, since he was probably the biggest Star Wars fan of the group. Can't say I blame him. I'm not even a Star Wars fan and I felt like MY childhood was ruined. Still a time I hold near and dear to my heart though. One I'll reminisce about for years to come. Thanks for brightening my day with your terrible mistake, George Lucas.

This replaces the "Wrong Number Song" in Equilibrium Dizrupted. Basically, after playing the Neden Game, Zeno can stumble into a random part of the carnival and have a chance of being forced to listen to this, with seemingly no source for the audio.

Zeno's YouTube channel has a "Favorite songs" playlist that is over 2000 songs long. It looked like he had been continually building it up ever since 2013 or so right up to the time that he died. I decided to listen to the playlist on shuffle while on the long drive to his urn burial. Most stuff was pretty standard. Stuff I already knew he liked. Ween, Cypress Hill, Weird Al, some obscure punk...all that. But tucked away in the depths of the playlist, I completely accidentally stumbled upon this amateur dubstep remix of the Mexican Hat Dance. I showed it to his friends and family at the burial, and honestly it gave us all a big much-needed laugh. Why did he like this? Since the video is unlisted, how the hell did he even find it? Burning questions we will never know the answer to. Figured we'd pay tribute to that laughter among his family and friends with this little meme.

Fun fact: We wanted to include the section of the original song that starts at 1:39, but it was so ridiculously bad that even Toadie couldn't recreate it.

[Equilibrium Dizrupted] Mexican Style

Not too long ago, a series of seemingly random characters were robbed from the worlds they came from.
Disgruntled though they were, they eventually managed to make the dimension of ENTROPY they lived in a place to call home.
There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to their imprisonment, and though they had learned to value each other's company, they longed for a way to get home.
This strange new status quo remained untouched for a short while. That is, until a sickly young king presented them with a prophecy.
A prophecy about the floofy-haired boy whose SOUL would save them all.
Now the inhabitants had been presented with a mission, which they waited months to enact.
Until at long last, the inhabitants were presented with a boy.

Figured for this special month it was time to give this AU a true opening.

The motifs here are sneak peeks of songs that are eventually coming for the Zeno album (yeah that's right that's still happening eventually). At least that's the case for the first two parts. The last part is just his Schreibertale theme, Is Military Time Violent?

[Equilibrium Dizrupted] Revenance

*(This place was once my home, in a time long past.)

An alternate timeline version of Zeno's hometown of Williamsburg, Brooklyn takes the spot of the Ruins. But there's a twist. This is a post-apocalyptic version of Williamsburg, one ravaged by the fabled Chaos Dunk. It is now known as "Proto Neo Brooklyn." Seeing his precious hometown warped and ruined is enough to inspire Zeno to move forward and make things right.

Zeno would often speak very fondly of his childhood in Brooklyn, talking about it as though they were the best years of his life. It is where he spent some of his formative years before moving out onto Long Island with the rest of us Schreiber people. He would rant passionately about how he feels the neighborhood isn't the way it was when he lived there. He recalled it being a slightly dangerous place where things were cheap and people where shady, which was just how he liked things. But now, according to what he said at least, it's a gentrified bourgeois neighborhood completely stripped of its culture. He and I even did a group report on Williamsburg during our senior year of high school, which I had to dial back because it was filled with hatred from him over what the place has become. Bottom line is, he cared about it a lot.
Also on a less important note, the absolutely fantastic "Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden" is a key part of the Armageddon Buddies lore and you should play it. It's very good.

Bonus sidenote: The nomadic blind musician Moondog, who Zeno loved because he fit his vibe absolutely perfectly, takes the role of the mouse trying to get the cheese.

[Equilibrium Dizrupted] New York Has Changed

The eccentric Zeno is the protagonist of our story. He thought things were through for him, but the universe had other plans. Only...is it even his universe?

The last post on Zeno's Tumblr (which he used quite often) was a reblog of this post commemorating the 100th anniversary of its initial creation. Every year on November 19 people would reblog it and say "Here's to [x] years of getting Narsty and leaving your friends behind." I happened to check Zeno's Tumblr some time in early 2021 to find that this reblog went up in November. Zeno's funeral was last July, so naturally I was hysterical. I quickly realized that Tumblr has a "scheduled posts" feature, and he probably scheduled this a long time ago when he had no idea that he would soon be getting narsty and leaving his friends behind. I highly doubt he planned it this way on purpose, but if he was watching me from beyond, he probably found that moment very funny. He was fucked up like that. But I figured hey, if he's getting re-introduced into the world, it might as well reference what is in essence his parting remark.

[Equilibrium Dizrupted] Narsty Outset

VT, the intergalactic trucker from Cowboy Bebop, takes the role of Toriel, joined by her trusty cat Zeros. Life's always been easy come and easy go for her, so she doesn't mind being lost without a home once more. That said, she knows that the populace is driven to harvesting the soul of a prophetic newcomer, and she doesn't take kindly to that kind of bounty hunter talk. So while Zeno's under her watch, nobody's laying a finger on him.

Zeno enjoyed a fair amount of older anime, and he held Cowboy Bebop in high regard. Something about the particular character of VT must have struck a chord with him, because he decided to name his car, and he named after her starship: Heavy Metal Queen. We as a group of friends have a lot of happy memories in Heavy Metal Queen, and the car itself kinda became part of our lives. It was a red fixer-upper of a car that was almost as old as he was. His family still has it, but nobody drives it. Maybe it's because it's probably haunted. Or maybe it's because it has terrible mileage. One of those.

Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope, otherwise known as the Insane Clown Posse, take the role of Papyrus. They wanna get back to their homeworld just as bad as everyone else, but that doesn't mean they won't have some fun while they do it. Besides, they don't particularly mind it here, since their Juggalo lore has straight up come to life before their eyes in this mystical world. All in all, you'd best be down with the clown, or you're not gonna have a very good time.

Zeno was very much fascinated with clown culture in general. As I've said many times before, he's the only person I've ever met who would genuinely take being called a clown as a compliment. A clown was what he wanted to be-- making others laugh, even (arguably especially) if he was the butt of the joke. With his dark tastes and his love for clownery in mind, it's no surprise at all that he was a Juggalo. The dark humor and generally morbid aesthetic of the band was right up his alley, but the messages of their music and their culture also really resonated with him. Not only accepting weirdness and embracing it, but living by it. Rejecting the ideas of following norms and trying to look good to others, because being a good person in the ways that matter and being yourself in all your own ugly glory is so much more liberating. I think he got into their music through Homestuck, but they'd be right up his alley even if he'd never read that.

The dark humor and generally morbid aesthetic of the band was right up his alley, but the messages of their music and their culture also really resonated with him. Not only accepting weirdness and embracing it, but living by it. Rejecting the ideas of following norms and trying to look good to others, because being a good person in the ways that matter and being yourself in all your own ugly glory is so much more liberating. I think he got into their music through Homestuck, but they'd be right up his alley even if he'd never read that.

Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope, otherwise known as the Insane Clown Posse, take the role of Papyrus. They wanna get back to their homeworld just as bad as everyone else, but that doesn't mean they won't have some fun while they do it. Besides, they don't particularly mind it here, since their Juggalo lore has straight up come to life before their eyes in this mystical world. All in all, you'd best be down with the clown, or you're not gonna have a very good time.

Zeno was very much fascinated with clown culture in general. As I've said many times before, he's the only person I've ever met who would genuinely take being called a clown as a compliment. A clown was what he wanted to be-- making others laugh, even (arguably especially) if he was the butt of the joke. Red, from the show Larva, takes the role of Flowey. He seems strangely content with being ripped from his homeworld, and seems to have a strange attachment to Zeno himself. What could this gross abominable creature be up to now?

"Larva" might be the single worst thing to come out of Korea.
Therefore, it's pretty understandable that it was a show that Zeno despised with a passion. But as was customary for our friend group growing up, his hatred for it made us all want to torture him with it. So that was one of our many, many running jokes. Torturing Zeno with Larva. It was a grand old romp. We had fun messing with each other like that. It wasn't the core of our friendship by any means, just part of the fun.
Let's make one thing clear though: he was absolutely justified. The show is AWFUL.

Gamzee Makara from Homestuck takes the role of Sans. He's probably the most chill out of anyone involved in this mess, but that's only because he got to take a hearty supply of his "stuff" with him to this new universe. Seems like the general population finds him rather unsettling, but he doesn't seem to mind. After all, he gets to spend his days on Juggalo Island with Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope, so it's probably an upgrade from whatever he was doing before.

Honestly, I have no idea if this is written well, because I'm not a Homestuck person. But quite a few of my closest friends are/were, and Zeno was absolutely one of them. Its weird writing and postmodern style storytelling was right up his alley. You could never ask him a yes/no question about Homestuck, because the answer would never be yes or no, rather going into an hour long essay about the nature of existence or whatever the fuck. Gamzee was the character he resonated the most with, for better or for worse. The Homestuck members of our group always said that if there were ever to be a Schreiberstuck, Zeno would be Gamzee. He already had that sort of iconic weirdness about him before reading Homestuck, so Gamzee basically spoke his language. Not to mention I'm pretty sure Gamzee is what got him to check out ICP and in turn become a Juggalo, so all in all, a pretty influential character. The flavor text references the fact that he even LOOKED like Gamzee. It was wild. I've tried getting into Homestuck multiple times in my life but never really could, so I knew next to nothing about Gamzee before Zeno died. After he died I learned a bit more about the character and was shocked to find the similarities. I don't think Zeno "kinned" anyone, but if he did it would definitely be Gamzee.

Guts, protagonist of the show Berserk, takes the role of Undyne. Even outside of his own universe he is bound to evil he only wishes to escape, so life doesn't feel much different to him. He has been promised by the powers that be that defeating this fabled Visitor will give him a leg up on defeating God Hand, and for that he will forego any hesitation.

The dialogue being delivered here is done by Zeno himself, obviously not by Guts.

Berserk was Zeno's favorite anime. Something about the mix of grotesque violence, burly men, hellspawn, angst, and moral ambiguity did it for him, I guess. Oh, that and the fact that it was on the older side. I don't know how he felt about the reboot, but I know he liked the original, because he was a total sucker for 80s/90s anime. I wish I could ask him about the reboot. He would probably give me some long diatribe about how much he hated it that would basically just boil down to "it's new and I don't like change." He was stupid like that sometimes lol. If this were for some other random role AU where Guts happened to take the role of Undyne, this theme would probably be called "The Struggler" or "The Black Swordsman," rather than just his name in all caps. But it does have a reason for just being "GUTS" here, and it's not just for the sake of being generic. Zeno could never just say "Guts" when talking about the character. He would always say "GUTS!" in a loud grunt, like he was doing a karate move or someone had just punched him in the stomach. I'm not sure what exactly prompted this, but he got a kick out of it, and probably because of that we did too.
