An unconventional story... told through an unconventional symphony.

An Evening with the Underground Symphonic Orchestra is a full progressive rock symphony reimagining of the soundtrack of Undertale, recorded alone by T.O. Bassett over the span of five years. A love letter to a game that completely changed my life, I wanted to pay tribute to the community and creators by dedicating as much time and effort as I could possibly could into writing one of the most ambitious video game albums ever made, a two-and-a-half hour long symphony with unconventional elements such as rock and electronic music, celebrating the equally unconventional story and design of what I think is one of the best video games ever made.

Ten Years with the Underground Symphonic Orchestra (EP)

So, uhm. It's been while. I actually uploaded another track on YouTube, a few months ago, and forgot to put it here, so I'll do that rather soon. For now, here's my first new Soundcloud content in about two years.

I promised a few new tracks before the album finally releases for real, so here's the first! I feel that this is often one of the more overlooked tracks in the soundtrack, despite it being used for a very important part of the story. It took me a long time to figure out what on Earth I was going to do with this one, but I was going through some of my favourite music (listen to Shell by An Endless Sporadic) and that pushed me into making this the first point in the album where I allowed myself to really go hard on the piano, and ended up realising that that's probably one of the things that I'm best at. Also the point where I started to worry that it was going to turn into a jazz album, but I'm very happy with how it sounds, and I had a lot of fun going back and recording the piano. That and the title of the track kind of ended up dictating the direction that the rest of the album would take.

A few new tracks and some re-recordings of older favourites will be coming over the next couple of months!

It's the end.

Part of me wanted to keep this as something that everyone had to listen through the whole album to get to, but I figured that people might enjoy this one on its own. I learned a lot over the course of writing this album, and again when re-recording it, and I like to see this track as a way to show everything that I've learned in that time. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing and playing it.

I just wanted to say thank you again to everyone who stood by me over the years and believed in me through all of this. It's been a long and difficult process, but it was more than worth it.

I haven't felt like this for a long time.

It's finally here! There's so much to say about this and why this track turned out this way. While I don't think that it tends to be many people's favourite in the original soundtrack, it's probably the most important one for me. Back when I first played the game, Reuinited would always make me really sad because the story was about to end, but, shortly after I started making a ton of friends because of the game, one Twitch streamer who I hung around with a lot (Rac the Kitty) started using it as the music that they play when they were starting their streams. Because of this, I started associating it less with the end of the story and more with the beginning of a new one, because it started marking just how drastically my life was changing at the time. I wanted to do something very special, so I wrote a song that's essentially about why the original piece of music is so important to me, and all of the friends that I'd made on that journey, but also a song genuinely about the story, from the point of view of Asriel finally starting to think clearly for the first time in a very long time and realising how much better his life can get.

Thank you, again, to everyone who stood buy me all these years. It honestly hurts to say that it's finally time to move on from Underground, now, but there are so many more adventures we could have together, if you'd allow me.

An extended version of a song that I adapted for an intermission video for Furality Somna, which was played between events both on stream and in-world on video screens. The video is my first proper music video, recorded through motion capture entirely in VRChat, and features a toy spider waking up at night and finding a dream world. Well, what do you know? After two years, I finally decide to start another music project. This'll also be the first time in nearly a decade that I've uploaded a game remix, but I finally got a chance to play Undertale and it's become one of my favourite game soundtracks ever, so I felt like I need to do this.

Today, I am finally back and announcing a new project: An Evening With the Underground Symphonic Orchestra. This album is a two-hour symphony/orchestral score based on the work of Toby Fox from the soundtrack of Undertale, reimagined as an orchestral work from Undertale's mix of 16-bit-ish and MIDI sounds and arranged into an imaginary film score. Undertale is one of my favourite games of all time and has one of the most intelligently-written soundtracks that I know, so this is the least that I can do to pay tribute to a game that means so much to me. Expect more releases soon. For now, here is the first, main movement, the fifteen minute-long Autumn Suite, comprising Fallen Down, Ruins, Ghost Fight, Home and Heartache.

Time to get back on track with releases! Winter Suite is 100% finished, now, but I want to actually release it in Winter. I felt like this one would be appropriate for the weather, right now, so here's a preview of Summer Suite from An Evening with the Underground Symphonic Orchestra.

Undertale and its soundtrack were created by and belong to Toby Fox. This is entirely a fan-made production and is not affiliated with Toby Fox in any way.

It's Raining Somewhere Else

Well, here it is! Technically over a year in the making (on and off, but still), but Winter Suite is finally here! I desperately wanted to get this ready in time for the Christmas season, so I've been working overtime touching up the tracks and making sure that everything really is ready. Winter Suite is the second main movement of An Evening with the Underground Symphonic Orchestra, comprising sans., Snowy, Enemy Approaching (as well as Stronger Monsters and... something else), Dogsong, Snowdin Town, Nyeh Heh Heh!, and Bonetrousle.

Winter Suite (sans./Snowy/Enemy Approaching/Dogsong/Snowdin Town/Shop/Nyeh Heh Heh/Bonetrousel)

Spring is just around the corner! That means that Spring Suite finally is, too, so it's time to show a preview for it, my favourite part of the suite and one of my favourite parts of the soundtrack in general, Dummy! This has ended up as one of the most ambitious things that I've ever written.

The Mad Dummy is an odd one. He kind of just shows up with barely any relation to the story, then disappears again almost immediately. Despite this, he ended up as one of my favourite characters by way of managing to cram so much personality and one of the most fun battles in the game into that short time. His battle music, Dummy!, is also one of my favourite tracks in the soundtrack, an extremely catchy reprise/remix of Ghost Fight, Napstablook's battle theme. I've had this idea for it for a very long time and it was very fun to finally be able to put it together like this. My only regret is that it kind of makes my own arrangement of Ghost Fight sound pathetic, but I suppose that that's fitting in its own way.

Spring Suite will be out next week, on March 22nd!

Happy Spring, guys! It's finally here! I was expecting this to be one of the hardest ones to reinterpret as an orchestral suite because the music of Waterfall already is mostly orchestral, but the inspiration started flowing pretty quickly when I got into it and I ended up finishing both this and Summer Suite in about a fifth of the time that it took me to finish Winter Suite alone. Spring Suite is the third main movement of An Evening with the Underground Symphonic Orchestra, comprising Danger Mystery, Undyne, Run!, Waterfall, Quiet Water, Memory, Dummy, NGAAAH!!, and Spear of Justice.

With Summer coming up, the season cycle is almost complete since we started last Autumn. That means that it's time for Summer Suite to show its face, and, therefore, here is a preview for it. That's not the end, though! That may be all of the seasons, but our journey is far from over.

With our entrance to Hotland, the tone starts to shift dramatically; old ruins, quaint villages and nature give way to technology, machines and sprawling industrial structures as we approach the heart of the Underground, and the inhabitants are much more lively and animated to match. As such, the soundtrack experiences a similar shift, with ambience and orchestral pieces being replaced suddenly with electronic and industrial sounds. I wanted to reflect this without giving up the orchestral premise of An Evening with the Underground Symphonic Orchestra, so what you're hearing now is a taste of how that's panned out.

Summer Suite will be out next week, on June 21st!

Here's part two of Core Suite! This one is an arrangement of CORE itself, what could be considered the main overworld theme of this part of the game - it's a bit of an odd section, in that sense, because it definitely has its own visual and aural theme, but it feels more like an extension to Hotland than its own separate area, is much shorter than the other sections of the game, and only has three tracks in the soundtrack attributed to it, which is how Core Suite ended up being three separate tracks like this.

I have to admit that this one has ended up as one of my personal favourite tracks in the entire album. I tried something very new with it and deviated a lot from the style of the original piece, and this also shows the moment where I learned how to get that big, full legato orchestra sound by layering the strings and brass in specific ways. I'm very happy with it.

I'd really like to see if anyone can deduce how the name of the track came about.

and here's the final part of Core Suite, an arrangement of Death by Glamour! I feel like you can tell which tracks from the original soundtrack are my favourite ones from how they turned out.

As you can tell, I tried something completely new with this track. This is my first ever attempt at realistic guitars, achieved here by Impact Soundworks' Shreddage 2 plugin, which I'd highly recommend. It's incredible just how far soundware technology has come since I started writing music, because I always felt like electric guitars were the hardest instrument to emulate, and yet here we are. This is by far one of my favourite things that I've ever written, and I'd love to write more music like this in the future.
