The Vantoth ship loomed like a specter against the stars, its dark hull a stark reminder of the iron grip they held over Neon’s fate. The Vantoth didn’t negotiate; they took what they wanted, and left devastation in their wake.

“Can we outrun them?” Neon’s voice was steady, masking the hammering of her heart.

Thorne shot her a look, his fingers continuing to dance over the controls. “Not likely. Their drives are faster. They knew exactly when and where to intercept us.”

“So they planned this?” The realization sent a chill through her. Thorne was supposed to be her way out, but maybe he was just leading her into another trap.

Thorne’s expression hardened as he pulled back from the console. “The Vantoth don’t need to plan. They own the routes near the Helios Expanse. This was always a risk.”

“Some risk.” Her tone was sharp, but there was no time for blame. She searched his face, looking for any hint of betrayal—but all she found was grim determination.

Before either of them could say more, the comm system crackled to life. A low, resonant voice filled the cabin. “Thorne. We know you have the Coranthium. Surrender it, and we may spare you.”

Neon felt her stomach twist. The Vantoth were offering mercy? That alone sent warning bells ringing through her mind. Thorne tapped the comms. “I don’t remember asking for mercy.”

Silence stretched across the line before the voice returned, colder this time. “You owe us a debt, Thorne. Don’t make this difficult. The Coranthium… or both of you.”

Thorne looked over at her, his jaw tight. “They want to scare us. Stay calm.”

But Neon saw something shift in his gaze, something darker. They were running out of options.

“Fine,” she said, forcing her voice to steady. “What’s our play?”

For a moment, he looked as though he might tell her to run, to abandon the Coranthium and save herself. But then, in a low, measured tone, he replied, “We make them think we’ll hand it over. I’ll buy us a little time.”

“And then?”

“And then we do what we do best.” His gaze met hers, a flicker of that old defiance. “We survive.”
