I think Carol is the night. Think of it at the end of each chapter only the Knight and Carol have been calling Kris. Kris and Carol are opening dark fountains because they are tying to find Dess who is somewhere else.

Fun fact: in Noelle’s room you can interact with her drawer and find a picture of her and dess and the dialogue says that dess was holding a cracked bat in the picture, and when we beat the knight their sword cracks and leaves a blackshard
