Sometimes, when talking about musicians who chose to remain faceless it’s easier [read: simpler] to just start with the facts. Much respected in house and techno circles, ItaloJohnson are a Berlin based trio who release what they call ‘functional sketches’ that combine their own array of influences with a very un-complex formula; on vinyl and on their own label. They have, so far, unleashed eight stamped platter transmissions, which have all been released with the same minimal fanfare but, as their sparse and monochrome website states: “ItaloJohnson is in no way trying to reinvent the wheel, rather trying to create reduced and functional sketches which can carry emotions through a DJ and dancefloor oriented sound.”

Seemingly more than aware of their place and the impact the music they produce and release is having in certain club spaces, they’ll be appearing at WetYourSelf’s Bank Holiday celebration on Sunday 24th August in Room One alongside the WYS! Residents Cormac, Peter Pixzel and Jacob Husley. Ahead of their appearance they’ve crafted a thoughtfully rugged and essential promotional mix that will undoubtedly go a long way to learn you way more about their outlook and their music than this fact-found introduction ever could…

Best known for a globally lauded mix series that’s over the years included the likes of Carl Craig, Motor City Drum Ensemble, DJ Koze and most recently Moodymann - DJ Kicks have also maintained a tradition of syphoning off 12”s of tracks originally premiered within the mix series and packaging them up with remixes hand selected by the compiling artist. This process has most recently brought with it Melchoir Productions Ltd and Oskar Offermann remixes of John Talabot as well as a Komon & Will Saul revision of Jabru. Next in line is a collaborative production from Seth Troxler and Amsterdam’s Tom Trago under their new production guise ‘T&T Music Factory’ which comes inclusive of remixes from Prins Thomas and Maxi Mill.

‘De Natte Cel’ was originally aired within luminary Seth Troxler’s contribution to the DJ Kicks series back in October 2015 - an offering that ‘haemorrhages delicacy and elegance’ according to Crack Magazine. Said to be inspired by the closing ceremony of Trouw - the track takes its title from the building’s origins as a printing house with ‘De Natte Cel’ translating as ‘Wet Cell’ - a room within which employees would wash ink from themselves post work.

Opening up with flanged pin drops and a buoyant thud, the track gathers with it allaying synth chords and a soft, bubbling bass line as it rolls on. Mangled signals and brisk hat shuffles pepper the top end as vocals bleed in and out of focus generating a rich with a chilly atmosphere. Norse producer and Full Pupp owner Prins Thomas then blows some warm Balearic air into the package as his reworking churns and gathers tension throughout. Rush Hour affiliate Maxi Mill then completes the record and propels the original forward with popping percussion and a sharp, purposeful bass line that caps off another fine addition to the DJ Kicks catalogue and a fitting homage to a bonafide institution of Dutch dance music
