NTS 07.04.23 Mathematics of Heartbreak

A journey into a mixture of sonic memories from Puglia, in the South East of Italy, through music by artists from the region and recordings that took place locally by musicians passing by. The show includes traditional music genres such as Pizzica, the forgotten story from the early nineties of its electronic counterpart Tecnopizzica, folk songs from cassette tapes sold at street stalls, and ballads sung in local dialects. All together with a multitude of other stuff spanning from an edit of 'Salento Love', a dubplate recorded by Busy Signal in 2013, to experimental Electronic music, Industrial Noise and Ambient releases from underground labels such as Canti Magnetici and the cutting-edge catalogue from the eighties of Minus Habens Records.

For this occasion, we decided to donate the proceeds of the sales to the victims of the earthquake that struck Syria and Turkey on 6 February 2023 through the Italian Red Cross association.

Special thanks to Davide Pepe, a multidisciplinary Italian artist, who contributed to the graphic design of the compilation with an image created from the waves of the sea eroding the beach, thus creating a visual effect of the earth rising.

His 'Somewhere' mix draws on this palette, conjuring a selection of blissed autumnal drone works and spacious meanderings for piano. Harnessing restrained composition, he explores the cavernous depths of sparse minimalism, juxtaposing meditative ambient with disruptive noise, to ultimately accentuate the lustrous melodies that characterize his work.

'The Double Face of the Zero' revolves around the progressive crumbling of the human condition, trapped in a Babel of toxic languages, hypnotised by seductive as much as false myths. The traversed architectures are empty or abandoned; inside, only faint echoes of mechanical rhythms reminiscent/incubus of models destined for passive consumption and the reproduction of consensus. Babbling, bare syllables are all that remains of a one-way communication. The new alphabets of communication systems do not need expressive space but consensus time. This journey is closed, however, by a text that is, in its own way, full of hope and that, like a compass, indicates a possible escape route from this mortal spiral of spectacular-media-political consensus. The sound sources from which the work originates are multiple. 

All electronically processed so as not to show their origin, in order to place themselves in an “other” space. All this not out of sonic sadism but out of a desire to elaborate a sound palette that is as personal as possible. A palette of sounds that tries to place itself outside the fences and categories that delimit even the area of research music, which instead, by definition, should be as model-free as possible.

[TIFMIX10] 10th episode of the Tocca il Futuro mix series comes from Taranto, musician and sound maker @gasparesammartano. His solo work is focused on gathering and manipulation of tapes and reflecting on the evolution of modern sampling techniques. 
He is also part of the Canti Magnetici label team.

Sammartano - Dark Pool Gangs

[TIFMIX11] 11th episode of the Tocca il Futuro mix series comes from Margherita di Savoia, musician and composer @truemantic. Truemantic is the creature of Toto Ronzulli. Influenced by the goth music scene from the 80’s along with references to the Cold Wave, Post-Punk and Industrial, Truemantic takes us around in hell through dystopian and unpleasant momenta followed by illogical atonal resolutions. In December, 2017 he released his first on-vinyl remix work with Tocca il Futuro Records, followed by his debut album “Truemantic” and his last single “Destruction” out via Milan-based label Marguerite Records. He is currently working on the making of his second album. A combination of contrasting resonances and different soundscapes that result in 70 minutes of quite atmosphere.

Truemantic - Antithesis

[TIXMIX12] 12th episode of the Tocca il futuro mix series comes from Tuscan / Milanese dj and digger Gabriele Casiraghi - Sunny Crypt. Following up last year’s first chapter, this mix is again focusing on weird Italian music from the past. 
Includes 60’s electronic library experiments, mid 70’s ambient-proggers, Tuscanian Avantgarde theatre , Sardinian organic folk chants, 80s emo waves recorded near my hometown, a guide to hypnosis and a lot more odd stuff.
Italy had (and luckily still has) a dense underbrush of small indie labels that released an amount of brave experimental / ambient / wave stuff; many of these recordings has seen the light for a second time as they’ve been reissued in the last few years, but most of them are still waiting to be brought to a bigger audience.
