SIGNA is a Copenhagen based artistic collective founded by Signa & Arthur Köstler. Developed since 2001 from performances by Signa Sørensen (now Köstler), the fundamental concept of their projects is best described as performance installation. Each project is a devised site-specific performance played in non-traditional art spaces. In collaboration with an ensemble of international participants, the founding members of SIGNA conceptualize and perform in wholly immersive endurance installations which engage with archetype, improvisation and highly curated visual landscapes, to indulge and investigate structures of power and degradation, fate, identity and desire.

The length of SIGNA’s performances range from 6 hours to 250 hours non-stop. The extreme duration of the work allows the improvisations to develop complex and intricately detailed stories, as well as provide ample time for audience members to acclimate to, and become insinuated in, the machinations of the world being portrayed. With rare exception, there is no physical boundary between performer and audience in SIGNA performances. The audience is invited to engage with the project as an individual might in daily life- absorbing all visual, aural, and tactile cues in the environment.

The recordings on this publication stem from the 2019 performance DET ÅBNE HJERTE (The Open Heart) and were selected and edited by Daniel Löwenbrück from hours and hours of sound from the (covert) video-documentation of the performance.

DET ÅBNE HJERTE was the sequel to SIGNA’s latest work, Das Halbe Leid (Deutsches Schauspielhaus, Hamburg 2017/2018). The 12-hour performance (from 7pm to 7am) featured a cast of more then 50 Danish and international performers, and explored the pendulum swings of power in the borderland between compassion and complacency.

60 people per evening were invited for a “seminar in empathy” run by the fictional association The Open Heart, founded by “The Compassionates” – these are individuals who accommodate and study human beings surviving on the fringes of society, known as “The Sufferers”. As a seminar participant, each audience member was assigned a bed, a locker, and a personal mentor from the ranks of “The Sufferers”, respectively. During the performance, the audience adopted their mentor’s name and clothes and experienced their world from inside their embodied experience.

"stimulated by our first public performance of "rarely heard music" (Das Münchner Konzert), we at once planned another concert in which the tight circle of performers was to be enlarged by a couple of dear friends, and once again the location had to have the lure of the special. oswald wiener suggested the church of the holy cross in berlin as our place of action, for we had learnt that it could be hired for public performances. everyone was most enthusiastic about playing a venue like that, and so "rarely heard music" came to be performed on 27 september 1974 on a grand scale before a large audience. the participants this time were attersee, günter brus, hermann nitsch, dieter roth, gerhard rühm, dominik steiger, oswald wiener, and arnulf rainer, who contributed to the performance as silent face-puller and contortionist. not only did the event assume almost monumental dimensions in terms of outlay, preparations, resonance and duration, at times it rose to unbridled, almost ecstatic climaxes; at one point brus, who had been manically blowing the one and same note into a kind of alphorn, even momentarily lost consciousness." - Gerhard Rühm "Über Selten Gehörte Musik”

A&E, ADOLF & EVA, ADAM & EVE, IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN, PICNIC, MIX is the first chapter in Paul McCarthy’s A&E video project. Paul McCarthy and Lilith Stangenberg performed PICNIC three times on August 2, 3, and 4, 2021, in the lower Sierra Mountains of California. This 2LP set, A&E, ADOLF & EVA, ADAM & EVE, IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN, PICNIC, MIX is roughly 80 minutes each of day 1, day 2, and day 3, merged.

"Paul McCarthy is widely considered to be one of the most influential and groundbreaking contemporary American artists. Born in 1945, and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, he first established a multi-faceted artistic practice, which sought to break the limitations of painting by using unorthodox materials such as bodily fluids and food. He has since become known for visceral, often hauntingly humorous work in a variety of mediums—from performance, photography, film and video, to sculpture, drawing and painting.

During the 1990s, he extended his practice into installations and stand-alone sculptural figures, utilizing a range of materials such as fiberglass, silicone, animatronics and inflatable vinyl. Playing on popular illusions and cultural myths, fantasy and reality collide in a delirious yet poignant exploration of the subconscious, in works that simultaneously challenge the viewer’s phenomenological expectations.

Whether absent or present, the human figure has been a constant in his work, either through the artist‘s own performances or the array of characters he creates to mix high and low culture, and provoke an analysis of our fundamental beliefs. These playfully oversized characters and objects critique the worlds from which they are drawn: Hollywood, politics, philosophy, science, art, literature, and television. McCarthy’s work, thus, locates the traumas lurking behind the stage set of the American Dream and identifies their counterparts in the art historical canon."

"The next 'RARELY HEARD MUSIC' production was staged once again in a private setting: at Hermann Ntsch’s Villa Romenthal by Lake Ammer on 12th February 1975: the STREICHQUARTETT 558171 (ROMENTHALQUARTETT) with Günter BRUS, Hermann NITSCH, Dieter ROTH and Gerhard RÜHM, which filled all of a three album boxed set. Although originally we had simply made a selection of the recorded material large enough to fill a single album, Roth was unable to part with the remaining material when it came to having the records pressed. The remorseless inclusion of even the failures, the idle moments, was so radical it almost bordered on masochism. In this particular case i felt it was an ascetic exercise in dispensing with all the correction and rectification, a ban on holding anything back. simultaneously he often hard school of total acceptance had a stimulating and in some ways liberating effect on me, mindful as i normally am of formal rigor and economy of means“ - Gerhard Rühm

"HALBER POGO (half a pogo) is a 60 minute recording in which scripted text-pieces are recited from memory. The selection of the pieces is left up to the moment, as much as how much content of each piece is remembered; along with their actually determined pronounciation - that often buggers off. This inaccuracy, the resulting pauses, the sensuality that arises from these circumstances, is what is of interest to HALBER POGO.“

"HALBER POGO ist eine sechzig minütige Aufnahme, in der Sprechstücke ohne deren Notation aus dem Stand rezitiert werden. Die Wahl der Stücke bleibt dem Moment überlassen, ebenso an wieviel Inhalt des jeweiligen Sprechstückes sich erinnert wird; dazu deren eigentlich festgelegte Betonung – die oftmals abhaut. “Ich und Sie - ein Roman aus dreibuchstabigen Wörtern“ (Me and Her - a novel of three-letter-words) by german conceptual Artist Andrea Tippel (1945-2012) was a work she started in 1993 and finished in 2009. As the title suggests the novel consists entirely of three-letter-words.

"The sketchbook version of the novel comprises 123 pages, and of these 97 pages were finished already in 1993. Another four pages were composed in 1995, 15 pages in March 1999, and seven further pages between 2007 and 2009. Andrea Tippel takes leave in the last pages of her recently deceased friends, among these Tomas Schmit, Ludwig Gosewitz, and Emmett Williams. The novel appeared in various printed and recorded versions: just like a work in progress, Andrea Tippel also performed the novel in sections between 1994 and 2009 at her kitchen table.
