I was on the phone with my Mother one night and she was telling me that she needed some new music. My Mom has pretty good taste, so naturally I had to give her some good stuff.

I decided that I was going to make a beat for her instead (which sparked the idea for “Cardiology“). I ended up giving the beat to REKS for his “R.E.K.S.” record (it was supposed to be the final song on the album but due to studio session issues did not make it in time before the master needed to be submitted).

Turns out, without me knowing what REKS was writing about, the first verse of the song ended up being about his mother. Funny how music can sometimes be a literal translation.”

BoyCott Blues may be one of my favorite MC's that I've had the pleasure of working with. He's a genuinely witty dude so naturally, his style is easily digested and most of the time will make you laugh at least twice in any given verse. We linked up a few years back when we were label mates (Brick Records). 

Blues and I became friends and continue to work on new music. Unfortunately, I didn't have the pleasure of recording this particular track. This was originally supposed to be a REKS joint but he was working on a million other records at the time. So I gave the beat to Blues. REKS hit me up and was like "I can't believe you gave that beat away!! But after hearing what Blues did to it, I can't even be mad...hahaha

There might actually be a Rain x BoyCott Blues project in the works right now..."

Story behind the throwback release:

"I met REKS in 2007 in kind of the same way I met Moe Pope. My homie DJ ON&ON, who I was working with at the time, had a radio show on JAMN 94.5 called The Launchpad. There was a section of the show entitled “The Launchpad Cypher” which featured 3-4 Boston area MC’s paired with 1 producer. He did this every week for about 18 weeks and at the end, released all of them on a mixtape (which can be found online if you look hard enough). I ended up producing 4 of those weeks and developed a lot of relationships with some of the best in The Bean.

REKS and I maintained a friendship and continue working together to this day. This song is a sequel to the original “Rapanomics”, which featured Torae & Slaine, produced by Statik Selektah off of the “In Between The Lines” mixtape. “Rapanomics 2″ features Termanology & Sha Stimuli and is featured on the “In Between The Lines 2″ mixtape (I think I have a few joints on there). Big ups to REKS for showing me a lot of love. He’s definitely opened a lot of doors for me. Listen and enjoy y’all"

The Story:
"One of my favorite songs off of the Moe Pope & Rain album 'Life After God'. I remember the day after I made that beat, I was walking home. I lived in JP at the time and so did Moe. He happened to be driving by and I had the beat on my iPod. He heard it, wrote something and we recorded it the next day. EDO seemed like a perfect fit and I was doing a lot of recording with him at the time. We also wanted to get our homie Maestro1ton from Agari Crew on it as well. Turned out to be a phenomenal joint."

Story behind the track!

"The Day Laborers & I go back to about 2003. We did a few shows together at CBGB'S (RIP) in NYC. I've always been a fan of these cats and we'd planned on doing a record together for a long time. 

2008, I get a call from John (I.N.F.) asking if I could mix and master their album "The Learning Process" which, in my opinion, is an amazing piece of work. When I was done mixing, they took a trip up from Long Island to approve and tweak the final masters and play a few shows with us.

 DJ Sosa came along, who is also Homeboy Sandman's DJ. I've never witnessed any one person consume so much coffee. Hahahaha what up Sosa?!? 

Anyhow, during that time they picked most of the beats for "Deep Space Soul", our collaborative record. "Pretzel Chips" is just one of those no-hook-24-bars-one-mc-after-another type of joints. And we never came up with a name for the song so we just called it what I originally named the beat. Pretzel Chips. Shouts to Homeboy Sandman & P.SO of the AOK crew for hopping on this one!"

"My dude AC has been doing his thing for a very long time. The Staten Island resident got a lot of shine from his mixtape series "Attack of the Blogs". He also dropped a Big Pun remix project with one of my longtime friends Kevin Scully; which is how we got linked up in the first place. AC was Kev's college roommate. I was about 23 when I met AC and we decided to work together. If you research our catalog together, you'll find some definitely classy material.

As for Skyzoo, this is the only song I produced for him. I met Sky in Boston at an In-store performance at UGHH.com (where I was working at the time). Great dude. I mentioned this song and he instantly knew who I was. I ending up DJing the instore with some broke CDJ that you couldn't even cut on. The thing decided to pause during his performance (for no logical reason) of "Way To Go" and he just looks at me. I'm like "I have no idea". Finally after the longest 15 seconds in the history of the world, I get it to play the track and this dude kept on rapping like the shit never even cut out!!! One of the most amazing subtleties I've ever been a part of. Its like he was a part of the record because as soon as it started playing again, he was on it like it was never an issue. Moments like these live forever. 

Anywho, this joint never actually came out on anything that I'm aware of. And apparently is pretty hard to find online. So, let's change that. Here ya go. The Healing.

Welcome to Week 9 of "Rain Check Mondays". This is a song I did with REKS, Dynas, and Jon Hope. Hope you like the story!

Story:

"My dude REKS always puts together amazing combinations with MC's on his tracks. Dynas, from Florida and John Hope from Rhode Island. The beauty of file transfers at work. These are 2 cats that I had wanted to work with and REKS was able to facilitate it. Good looks homie!

This was one of my favorite beats that I had made at the time. The cuts for the hook were already recorded before I sent it to them so, it was a fill-in-the-blanks type of song. I had never met Dynas or John Hope, but was looking forward to them hopping on the track.

Recently, I happened to comment on one of Dynas' Facebook posts. This was 3 years after the song was recorded. I mentioned that I was a fan and that I loved his verse on "My Word". He was like "oh shit, that was you who made that beat?!?" We've since then been in contact, shared fatherhood stories, and have plans to work more in the future.

If this had been 20 years ago, a song like this would never have happened. I feel blessed to live in a time where I can record an entire album with someone hundreds or thousands of miles away. I mean, look at what happened with Foreign Exchange? 

North Carolina to The Netherlands...and they were Grammy nominated. Beautiful."
