Burkhalter Bops is a collection of original beats made by 2nd and 3rd grade girls at Burkhalter Elementary in East Oakland, created in partnership with Today’s Future Sound and Girls Inc.

Over several weeks, these young producers learned how to make their own beats—programming drums, layering samples, and creating their own sound from the ground up. The project also features contributions from TFS instructors Phillipdrummond (aka Dr. Beats), Lax the Monk, and Evan Keeler-Wolf (aka Egon).

The cover art was inspired by the students and hand-drawn by our in-house artist @ronthegraphicsguy—no AI used.

Music Is Life is a beat tape created by 5th grade students at August Schilling Elementary in Hayward, CA, in collaboration with Today’s Future Sound.

These young producers learned the fundamentals of beat making—from drums to samples to full track arrangements—guided by TFS instructors Phillipdrummond (aka Dr. Beats), Da Rap Nerd, and Evan Keeler-Wolf (aka Egon). The result is a powerful expression of creativity, confidence, and community.

The artwork was inspired by student ideas and brought to life—100% hand-drawn, no AI—by our in-house artist @ronthegraphicsguy.

“Window to the World” is a student-produced beat tape created by youth on probation through Today’s Future Sound’s Therapeutic Beat Making program.
These tracks were made by young people participating in our court-involved and juvenile justice programs, using Hip Hop production as a tool for healing, creative expression, and skill-building. Each beat offers a glimpse into their lives, strengths, stories, and imaginations — a real “window to the world” from their perspective.

Through hands-on, trauma-informed workshops, participants learned:
• Beat making & sound design using Ableton, Push, MPC, and more
• Emotional regulation and empowerment
