Discovery Symphony

Here's one of my favorite tracks from my CD "Rising With The Mountain."  Features lots of percussion, and piccolo, flute, oboe, guitar, mandolin, and ukulele.  

The Woodsmith

I first began to piece this song together early one morning in Mexico with a little help from a grand view of the Pacific Ocean.  I used tree branches to mimic the sound of wind in the trees, and some other unusual percussion instruments.  Alto flute also takes a few passages.  

Far Away

I wanted this piece to have a techno drum set feel, buried beneath lots of lively, earthy percussion tracks, so I used bass drum, snare drum, and hi hat sounds which would be heard in dance or techno music.  A group of rhinos is called a crash; I couldn't think of a better subject for a song packed with percussion - heavy, powerful, and harmonious.  This one will also keep bass players busy!

Crash Of Rhinos

Lots of sounds happening in this one, including dinner plates, rocks, and jaw harp or 'Snoopy" harp.  Took a while to make the jaw harp sound right, but nothing else makes such a happy twang.  Well, maybe didgeridoo comes close...

Cool Blue

For soprano saxophone, drums, percussion, bass, and ukulele.

Underground

This is a sleepy little tune with classical guitar, fretless bass, and light percussion, sort of a tribute to some of my favorite natural sounds.  Waves, wind in the trees, snowstorms – they all seem to say “hush”, and remind us that whatever is heavy on our minds and hearts is temporal, or biblically speaking, "This too shall pass."

SnowyEvening

This is one of my contributions to the Distant Friends recording project (CD coming out in June).  Featuring Joe Drzewiecki on tenor sax, Matt Markel on trumpet, Dave Nelson on upright bass, Derek Cornett on guitar, and me on drums, percussion, ukulele, and keyboard instruments.  Lots of fun watching this one come together; some tracks were done at my home studio, while drum set was done at Atomico Studios by Alberto Garay, and other musicians worked their magic at Studio 770 in Brea, CA, where Shantih Haast so skillfully put the whole thing together.

City

This one is about a bad roll of the dice, a temperamental marble on a roulette wheel, the drag of heavy feet on a humble walk home, a revealing sunrise on a shark-toothed town, about reaching into your pocket for the cash you spent like you had it.  Derek Cornett adds a little bluesy sorrow on guitar.
