These two heavyweights of the UK club scene circled between old- and new-school jungle, high-tempo footwork – sometimes raw, sometimes soulful – hardcore and beyond.

This is my 4 hour opening set from the December edition of Group Therapy in Copenhagen (@grouptherapy_cph). I was really sick in the week running up to this party and very nearly pulled out but am so glad I made it. 

The party was a world AIDS day fundraiser raising money for AIDS-Fondet and “Ungegruppen”. It was also the first party in their new venue Den Anden Side. The vibes were incredibly special and I was honoured to play the first songs in their new home. This was my love letter to everyone we lost to AIDS and a chance to play some of my most cherished records.

We’re celebrating the tail end of the Lunar New Year with our fourth release, courtesy of Seoul-based duo Salamanda. Since 2018, they've carved out a unique niche for themselves, resulting in an expanding aural world that feels sensual, psychedelic, and whimsical. Uman Therma and Yetsuby explore new material here and put together something distinct within their own body of work: their first mix of all-Korean music.

It's a steady montage of UFOs that float on rather than zoom by, giving the listener time to take their measure as the songs fearlessly move through pop, noise, ambient, RnB, and classical. Featured in Pitchfork's 2023 "Best of" list: https://pitchfork.com/thepitch/best-dj-mixes-2023/

3024: Please describe the mix in a single sentence ?

I thought I’d make a mix in the currently popular yet controversial 140-160bpm range, as there’s some amazing music in this space between techno and jungle that doesn’t revolve around straight kicks, and I think it deserves more attention.

3024: What DJ inspires you at the moment / has inspired you throughout the years and why?

Throughout the years.. well apart from this guy Martyn I’d have to say Andi Baumecker. I don’t know many DJs with such a depth of knowledge across so many genres. His passion for music is relentless and continuously inspiring.

Recently I’ve been really into Polygonia. Brilliant producer and DJ from Munich creating ethereal worlds through sound so convincing you can almost step into them. I went to see her open Berghain last September and it was incredible, like being in a rainforest on acid. 

3024: What are you working on / what have you got forthcoming?

There’s a new EP coming this summer which will be announced soon, and a few remixes before that, for Jakojako and Hercules & Love Affair (with Mr Baumecker). Otherwise, I’m having fun developing a new live set involving MIDI controlled lights, which I premiered at Superbooth last week.

NYC’s Andrew Devlin takes a break from his usual dance floor facilitation to offer us a poolside soundtrack inspired by a recent stay at The Standard hotel in Miami Beach.

Q. Where do things currently sit on @thelevelparty front, and what other projects have you been busily chipping away at?

A. What’s that line? “We’ve been coming to the same party for 12 years now, and in no way is that depressing.” I think we’re nearing 10 now. In any case, the party feels like it’s in a really good place. After doing it more or less solo for a minute, I brought 5 residents on board who I love dearly–Alien D, KFeelz, Nigelthreetimes, No Sir, and Yibing. Everyone has so much range and energy, it’s been special getting the group together.
I’m really excited for our Glen Falls House weekender upstate in July (14-16). We get to take over this little hotel in the woods for a weekend and stretch out. It’s a dream. Big shoutout Josh Houtkin at Good Room for all his work making that a reality.
Past that, we’ve got some shows at our usual spots, Le Bain and Good Room, as well as a couple of day parties at Public Records’ new Nursery and a July 4 BBQ at Mansions. Would really like to bring the group of us to some other cities soon. I dream about heading back to New Orleans, doing Level Miami, Level Mexico City, Ibiza, etc…Anyone reading this wants to get in touch, let’s build ;)
Personally, I run a small sound company here in NYC, so I’m trying to grow that business and maintain my sanity. I’d like to get back into making music soon, even just a few cheeky edits. Start a podcast (I know, I know). And eventually open up a venue. A pub of sorts with good food and music. 

Q. What inspiration did you draw upon when putting the mix together?

There is, in fact, a pretty specific one. This mix is dedicated to the pool at the Standard in Miami. I went in January for the first time and recorded this when I got home. The vibe there is so strong. You’re sitting outside, eating the best caprese salad of your life, there’s a 2’ iguana crawling on a palm tree, you’ve got a green juice or a margarita in one hand. Everyone is having a good time and partying in this really respectful way. They’re just sipping on a cocktail or walking to the hot tub or making out in the pool. 
I thought a lot of that had to do with the soundsystem and the music programming–there are speakers everywhere (including underwater) playing at like 6/10 volume. The music is on a sort of soulful r&b/ balearic tip. I was on Shazam all weekend. So this mix is a dedication to that–if someone gave me 80 minutes to DJ the Standard Miami pool, this is what I would play.

Q. Are there any records in the mix that are particularly close to your heart, or old favourites that you’ve been keeping up your sleeve for the right moment? 

A. Definitely. To run through a couple… ”Wall Street” I discovered reading Dub by Michael Veal. Great book for anyone interested in DJ’ing, soundsystems, production, etc. I got really into Jackie Mittoo reading that, and have been playing that track since. 
The Lauryn Hill track, “Sweetest Thing” I heard in a coffee shop in Amsterdam in 2009, forgot about completely, then recently re-discovered.
“Don’t Break my Heart” is a big song for my wife and me. We both stumbled on it when we started dating at the beginning of 2020. We almost chose it as our first dance at the wedding, but thought the lyrics were a little dark. Anyway, big tune at the house. 
And the last track, the Mike Huckaby remix, is close to my heart. I was lucky enough to meet Mike a few years ago and gave him a ride to his hotel after a gig. He had just played for 3 hours and all he wanted to talk about was my Volkswagen Jetta. He was really such a sweet, warm guy, and this track always makes me think of him. R.I.P.

About the Mix: «Me considero und DJ de House, mismo si a veces el House como género no domina en mis sets. La manera en que voy armando la noche -en conjunto con les bailarines en la pista- es algo que viene de ahí, y de recuerdos y experiencias compartidas con gente que definieron mi propio sentimiento del House, que está alejado de la narrativa oficial. Es en Colonia, la capital de la música electrónica en Alemania, en su momento denominada “Baby Chicago” por les DJs que nos venían a visitar desde aquella ciudad, donde conocí la pista de baile que proponía cada semana nuevos pasos. Christian S y yo teníamos una fiesta llamada “Lost” a la cual invitamos a Elbee Bad, con el que me fui en tren de Berlin a Colonia. Para mi hubo un antes y un después ahí - de cómo tocar, de cómo dialogar con la pista de baile. Este set que les presento me llevó a esos recuerdos y refleja una manera de ver el House que tiene que ver con Elbee Bad, The prince of dance, que tiene que ver con mi sello Cómeme, con Ana Helder, con Katerina, Diegors, con Christian S, con Sano - y que también tiene que ver con lo Latino en el House, y con Sudáfrica, donde el House nunca se fue y donde siempre lo he sentido muy vivo, en nuevas interpretaciones de un mismo sentimiento. En Johannesburgo sonaban temas de Cómeme (Como “ósea hello” de Diegors), y les DJs de Cómeme siempre tocaban tracks que venían de allá - con DJ Spoko marcando el paso de los ritmos que disfrutábamos en ese momento, culminando un día en el manifiesto colaborativo entre Spoko, Elbee y yo que fue “Something about the Groove”, título de mi Mix.
Ellos ya no están con nosotres, pero de alguna manera si permanecen vivos en nuestro ritmos y sonidos, y nuestra propia interpretación del House.»

For this special edition of the fabric podcast, Lakuti joins us ahead of her B2B with Tama Sumo for Love Child's Pride takeover.‍ A diverse range of uplifting sonics, deep dance-ready grooves, and selections that seem to warp and traverse through continents and cultures.

Born and raised in South Africa, Lakuti has become an internationally acclaimed DJ, record label owner, and influential figure in the electronic music scene. With a passion for music developed at a young age, Lakuti’s sound has developed since her move to the UK in the 1990s to one that seamlessly blends a wide range of genres from house, techno, disco, Afrobeat and beyond.

Alongside her DJ career, Lakuti has been instrumental in fostering creativity within the industry. In 2001, she co-founded the Uzuri Recordings label, which has since become a respected platform for groundbreaking artists. Through Uzuri, Lakuti has championed innovative sounds, pushing boundaries and introducing emerging talents to a global audience.‍

Also known for her activism and commitment to social change, using her platform to address issues of diversity, equality, and inclusivity within the music industry, Lakuti's dedication to her craft extends beyond the DJ booth and record label. With a tireless efforts to create more inclusive spaces have inspired and empowered countless individuals, Lakuti is blossoming into a true icon in the industry.

For our Pride Special Lakuti is back with frequent collaborator Tama Sumo for another iconic B2B set, and joins the fabric podcast with a very special mix ahead of time.

We feel extremely honoured to be able to present the next addition to our mix series, our dear friend Bart live at Distrikt.

In his time on this planet, Bart only ever played out a handful of times. He wasn’t particularly infatuated with the the glitz associated with the DJ lifestyle, above all his focus lay with digging for incredible music. By the time his talents began to receive the attention they deserved, he already possessed a bag of tunes so refined it would’ve been easy to mistake him for someone who’d been at it for twice as many years as he.

The recording is the majority of his 2 1/2 hour set, enduring until till the club’s close. It is a prime example of what DJing can be when it’s at its best, a journey with moments of elation, introspection, complexity and even humour too. We saw Bart’s tunes bring a feeling of unity to the Distrikt dancefloor seldom seen in any club which is a memory we will always cherish.

CURB SIDE MIX: BART

The past decade has seen Andy Garvey become a leading presence within the Australian music landscape. As a producer, esteemed radio host, label boss of her own @purespacefm imprint, and co-founder of the NECTAR events collective, Andy’s passionate dedication to her home scene is abundantly clear.

Having recently relocated to Berlin, she is now able to bring her home-grown passion and a strong inclination towards all things trippy, vibrant and percussive to new shores, with a host of appearances scheduled across Europe over the summer.

Andy's Patterns of Perception 114 is wide-ranging but also deeply transportive, with a rare fluidity at its core. Inspired by a disparate string of gigs that she played before leaving Australia (a warehouse party, a bush doof and a sunrise set), this mix sets out to capture the unique energy and vibrancy of Australian dance floors - and the sounds that currently move them.
Round, rolling grooves flow and undulate, connecting far-flung soundscapes. Exotic, hallucinogenic atmospheres swirl in capacious fullness. An arresting and distinctly Antipodean balance of hedonistic frenzy and sleek composure.
