Unusual, virtuosic, ragged, intelligent and highly entertaining; words that don't usually marry well, although there is hardly a better description than Salford's superb Gypsy Jazz troupe Toe Rag.

Originally formed as a small jamming project in 2009 by guitarist, composer and all-round europhile Paul Dennis in Salford University, the phenomena that is Toe Rag is more than refreshing. Inspired by the European legend of Django Reindhardt and Stephane Grappelli, Toe Rag's middle finger salute to the superficiality of both contemporary popular music and the arch snobbery of Jazz is worthy of more than just a quiet applause. Creating music to not only to be appreciated over a glass of wine in the lounge in a comfortable chair, but also the raucous bars, clubs and dance halls of the urban night, Toe Rag's overwhelmingly raw and jagged musicianship from its roster of permanent and guest members employs an incredibly broad jazz palette to achieve one single aim - to have fun through sweet Gypsy Music
