Escaping was a necessity; living in a concrete jungle made her feel trapped, at times as though she were fighting for breath. Whether it was the peace of the countryside or the paradisiacal surroundings of the beach, these places gave her a sense of renewal, refreshing her mind and her senses. This would only last as long as the trips did, it was a sad truth that the rejuvenation would soon dissipate as she stepped back into the rat race. 

As is their annual tradition, in December Leipzig's R.A.N.D. Muzik Recordings marked the end of another year with a VA compilation featuring music from fresh faces and old friends. Swirling around the sounds central to the label - breaks, house, electro and techno - the four-track EP calls on the talents of R.A.N.D regular Tim Schlockermann and new blood Adam Strömstedt, Barney In The Tunnel and Olsvangèr.

Superb work  as always here from Lithuania's @pletnev, with a choice cut from his new @burninmusic EP 'When The Job Is Done'. Atmospheric synth swoops play out a melancholic riff while juicy acid rises from the depths, all pummeling along at a pacey clip. Great attention to detail throughout.

Electronic dub energies are glued together with tropical island paradise level ambience, waves of effortlessly full pads and lush bass pulses evaporate into mist. A moment of reflection and centring before a second act of chunky and bombastic beats, dancing in harmony with the soothing nature of it’s humble beginnings. Prototrek brings us a fat slice of deep space pastoralism, high functioning trip-hop from the deepest reaches of the cosmos. The soundtrack to an interstellar journey towards unknown frontiers and endless paradigm-shifting possibilities. starting off the B side is Liquid Rats (Environment Mix). True downtempo and psybient of the highest order. Tranquil, dynamic and effortless.

Finishing up on the B side is the insanely warehouse ready Beach Goth (A.D.H.D Re-work). Straight up late 90’s/early 00’s electro and big beat with genius level intellect, a “Need For Speed: High Stakes” type beat. High octane drums, nitrous infused breaks and laser accurate bleeps all riding a bassline with infinite torque. Sounds for hitting the accelerator deep in the night and not looking back. Big “Tokyo Drift” energy on the tubular bells near the end, sending this piece high into the stratosphere. Full dichotomous flip on the records finisher; Smoking With Laraaji. Digital whip-birds announce your arrival at this atmospheric finale, warm synthetics and naturalistic percussion closes this pentalogy in the only way that feels right. With a sense of triumph and optimism. Something we could all use more of in our lives.

Demi Riquísimo has collaborated with close friend and fellow producer Manami on his sub-label A Lifetime On The Hips. The release see’s Demi Riquísimo and Tokyo born Manami link up on two new originals, accompanied by stand-out remixes from Subwax owner Baldo and prolific Italian DJ and producer Matisa.

The fourth release on the sub-label it opens up with the EP’s namesake 'Sugar Snap’ a dreamlike record that effortlessly blends ambient textures and celestial melodies, yet remains primed for the dance floor. Following suit, the A2, 'Interstellar,' aptly lives up to its name, enhanced by cosmic soundscapes that transcend traditional boundaries.

Barcelona based DJ, producer and label owner Baldo takes the reins for a remix of the A1, delivering a spacey rework infused with breakbeat elements that breathes alternative life into the original. While on tour in the US last October to promote his mix CD 'Beatz &amp; Bobz Vol 1' Darren Chapman teamed up with Florida's breakbeat bad boys 'The Brothers of Funk' to produce his first record. Three days in the studio with Johnny, Kimmi (owners of Freakin Music) and Oscar and the first collaboration between Freakin Music and Functional Breaks is ready to rock the dancefloors of the world in the shape of 'G13' Mixes come from Functional Break's Spoon Wizard who funks the tune up, with the other mix coming from Florida outfit Sensei (who are Johnny Dangerously and electro DJ/Producer BFX) take tune a bit harder and darker. Sensei will be releasing one of their own productions 'I'm The Only one' on Functional Breaks in the near future. G13 gets a full release on Functional Breaks in June 2000 and was promo'd on vinyl at this year's Winter Music Conference in Miami Florida with excellent reactions.

Brothers of Funk v Darren Chapman G 13 (Functional Breaks) The collaboration between Exeter and Florida has resulted in the best FB release for a while. The original is a funky take on the breaks scene with a driving bassline. The first remix from Spoon Wizard takes it funkier. Leaving the electro beat to the side. Sensei then get on the remix duty and go on all out attack. A thumping kick drum electro style meets a bassline that comes at you like the tornadoes that rip through Florida itself.

Brothers of Funk v Darren Chapman G 13 (Functional Breaks) **** Another Quality release for Exeter's premier beat freaks, this is collaboration between the local DJ and Florida breakbeat duo, Brother of Funk. An electro - esque creation, the skippy breaks take a back seat to the driving acidic riff, low resonating b-line and synth stabs reminiscent of old school euro techno. Fear not its not full on hoover house and is subtle enough for breakbeat and prog house DJs alike. Spoon Wizards mix strips it down into a funky minimalist groove, while Florida's Sensei take it into darker techno territory. A solid Ep for all break heads and prog housers out there
