Togaz Live: Audio From Dead Wax

This tune was mixed on the fly by Brother Mattlantis while he was showing me some tricks in Reaper. He started finding all the things I was hearing in my head WAAAAYYYY quicker than me.
Gotta hand it to my brothers in the band for turning in a pretty damn killer performance too. Layton is so solid on this you'd swear it was a drum loop.

Tri-State Crematorium

This version of Zombie Strippers from Valdese is  on the "They Came to Destroy the Carolinas" compilation disc produced by Dead Wax Records in Lenoir, NC. 
The band recorded the track in "Toagz Tavern" on a Fostex VF-16 and moved tracks in Reaper for mix down on an old XP Windows machine. 
The sound we are going for is that of the first Fastway record, early Motorhead, early Kiss and the first Motley Crue record. 

Zombie Strippers from Valdese (Comp Version)

SECOND Testing on LANDR mastering on one of the tunes we have mixed for The Togaz record.
Lesson learned.
NEVER, EVER allow looking at the visual of a waveform make you second guess your own ear.
I KNOW better and this version is way better dynamically than the first. 
Brian Beaver played the drums on this cut with four mics on the kit. He also played "band director" while we were recording. I don't think it would have turned out half as cool without his input on it.
Chris Berry has two bass lines one clean/one dirty and did a Juno synth line. He and Brian really locked in and carried the groove on this tune.
Jon Parsons did all the spacey "Floydesque" intro/outro guitars, a rhythm part and sang the choruses. All of his guitars were improvised on the spot and there are no overdubs on Jon at all. I've been playing music with him for 20 plus years and he never fails to give me a "wow moment" when we are in the middle of a project. 
I played the heavy rock rhythm guitar part, the fills, did the "Frehley rip off" solo in the middle, played the melodic keyboard parts and sang the verses.
Chris and I mixed it a couple of months back for the album we've been working on for a while and I wanted to see what the difference between a "mastered version" and our "straight up mix" version is if I'm going to start using the service. There is a lot more going on in this tune than normal Togaz fare so I thought it would be a great test. Being pretty pleased with the results at 192 bps on an MP3- I think that I will try it for a while. I imagine an uncompressed .wav file is going to be even better.

This track is from the soon to be released (in some format or another)Togaz "album".  This one is unmastered, but I dig the tune and where we went with it. It has been a long time coming, but the record is almost finished.

I ran across this gem of us about a month after Chris and Grayson joined us in July 2011. Blood on the Concrete Floor with a full band complement. I'm not sure I had heard it since we dumped it out of the multi-track, but it was worth sharing. All of us were playing it pretty intensely. 

Blood On The Concrete Floor (live In The Garage)

This one was a trip to run across yesterday. I think we played it exactly one time when we were rehearsing in the garage. 
We banged out the chord progressions and this is one of those prime examples of "Jonny on the Spot" with lyrics and melody. Chris locked in with Grayson on the groove and I don't think I've ever played the guitar like this track before... or since. 
It was a neat one off that we should have gone back to investigate a bit more. GOOD stuff though

Technically the Togaz formed in the summer of 2010, but spiritually they formed the spring of 1982 during the filming of a high school English project. (See Julius Caesar 1982)
Jon and Sam have been joined at the hip ever since like some perverse Jeremy Irons amalgam in projects including Hemp Rope Dream, The Plurals and Happy Valley Social Club. 
Through their veins pours a mixture of Dave Roth and Boba Fett as birthed upon the world by a coupling of Robert Smith and Linda Lovelace. 
When Grayson and Chris joined the team on drums and bass respectively in 2011 the mixture was complete to unleash upon the world a brand new batch of quadragenarian cock rock complete with firetrucks, hookers, comic books, guitar strings, used condoms and pyrotechnics. We are everything that our mothers ever feared we would be... and less.
