Peggy Gou’s Gudu Records steps into 2022 with Brain De Palma’s second EP for the label, Purple Brain.

Although this is only his second release under the Brain De Palma name, Alexei Versino has been honing his sound for the best part of a decade, both solo (as Panama Keys) and as one half of the duo Stump Valley, previously releasing on labels like Dekmantel, Soul Clap and Off Minor. Born in Ukraine but settling as a child in Turin, he’s currently based in Berlin and makes up a key part of the Gudu stable.

Coming straight out the gate with an instantly impactful bassline, opening track ‘IQarus’ sets the tone for the rest of Purple Brain: bold melodies and basslines shot in high-definition, full of detail and idiosyncrasies. As with his last EP for Gudu, cinema is a key reference for Brain de Palma: ‘IQarus’ is a reference to his directorial namesake’s first film, while later in the EP, ‘(O.W.D.) Once Were Dancers’ nods to the 1994 drama Once Were Warriors, “dedicated to all the ravers, DJs, aficionados who had to go through the lockdowns … a shout out to people who keep on fighting for the underground culture!”

Elsewhere on the EP, ‘Purple Brain’ pairs an unforgettable arpeggio with stargazing stabs and a marching cowbell beat, while the Netherlands’ Deniro takes ‘IQarus’ into the depths of the night with a cosmic remix that grabs hold of a groove and refuses to let go.

Following up on last year’s debut release, Chontane returns with 'Manx', the second EP on his label, TANE. This five-track collection continues his exploration of sound design, moving into fresh territory while retaining the distinctive energy that marked TANE001. With TANE002, Chontane invites listeners into a diverse sonic landscape, emphasizing mood, texture, and the subtle intricacies of rhythm.
'Manx' marks a significant progression in Chontane’s artistry, expanding on the foundation set by TANE001, which echoed the nostalgia of 90s and early 2000s rave culture. While his first EP blended old-school, rave-inspired techno, atmospheric tracks, and a touch of jungle, TANE002 boldly ventures into new, uncharted territories. It challenges traditional genre boundaries, delving deep into the potential of sound design, and offering a forward-thinking perspective that feels attuned to the future.
The EP highlights Chontane’s dedication to capturing a wide spectrum of moods and textures within a single record. The title track, ‚Manx', sets the stage with a dark, hypnotic presence. Rich in layered textures and atmospheric undertones, the track fuses a powerful kick with resonant toms, deep subs, and eerie pads. Haunting, glitchy vocal snippets add an extra dimension, making 'Manx' a compelling, immersive experience.
On 'Gazebo,' the EP’s A2 track, Chontane shifts the energy, delivering a composition that balances driving rhythms with a melodic core. The combination of dynamic drums with an epic, mystical theme creates a piece that’s both uplifting and introspective, standing out for its ability to evoke grandeur while maintaining a sense of optimism.
The B-side leans into a more shadowy atmosphere, with 'Oolean' blending metallic percussion and a throbbing bassline. The track’s ominous pads and powerful kick drum propel it forward, creating a narrative that’s intense and captivating.
B2 offers a fitting conclusion to the vinyl release, presenting a track that blends dreamy, atmospheric melodies with a robust kick and driving sub-line. The mystical qualities of this composition make it an evocative and memorable closer.
The digital-only track, 'Thumb Print,' rounds out the EP with a relentless, peak-time experience. Its hypnotic rhythm and expansive sense of scale make it a standout track, perfect for igniting dance floors and capturing listeners' attention.

Picking up where they left off, Reclaim Your City draw first blood in 2020 with 'Liquid Shards' - a split 12" epic courtesy of Den Haag's TAPE co-founder Deniro and Brighton's new sensation Rene Wise. On the menu of this masterclass in no-bullshit techno that moves in between plural states of consciousness, the two producers harness a double pair of laser-accurate rollers that pack some serious punch, trimmed, shaped and polished for optimum impact on the dance floor. 

Taking the helm of the A-side, Deniro steps up with a duo of streamlined techno bullets that delve smack dab the cream of '90s atmospheric and dubbed-out tech territories. Whilst zoned out opener 'Shards' cracks the mirror into an infinity of glassy textured synth splinters and solar-powered sub-bass moves, sure to lift off any crowd through some intensive, stamina-testing deus-ex-machina, pared-down banger 'Static' lets out the playful bassy bounce and bleep-laden engineering do the talk for a straight out bone-crushing workout that quietly engulfs everything in its wake. 

Flip it over and here's Rene Wise running the hoodoo down in truly massive 4x4 sensei fashion. Pulling out a nasty cavalcade of intestinally disquieting 909 kicks out the deepest blue, alongside mazy networks of verbed-out drums and heavily altered synthetic samples, 'Liquid Dancer' sets the boiler to eleven from the Baltic to Hawaii, which is no good news say the oceanographers. Bringing up the rear to this quartet of steady shooting havoc wreakers, 'Juggler' is no ancillary DJ tool but a much apt and functional floor squasher in its own right. Just let the pressure rise, people lose their shit a bit and throw these into the melee as a memo of how good techno is when done with such sentient genius.

As release notes for the entire compilation starkly state in the beginning, “these are strange times and it looks like the whole world is going crazy”. Indeed! And my mind, when faced with fear, anxiety and uncertainty about the future, quickly rushes to my happy place. My happy place is a summer festival…thousands of people dancing, hugging, frantically waving their glow sticks, sucking on a pacifier and thrashing about in their ridiculously wide pants. Ok, ok… my happy place is a 90’s rave..guilty as charged! But have you ever danced to Underworld on a warm summer night? If you want to know that feels, you don’t have to dig for that Underworld CD. Just cue Vril and His Master’s Voice’s “Cryosleep”. 30 seconds into that track and you’ll think Bill Clinton is still in office and those raver pants are a thing of beauty. That track is a time machine! We have all the raver era boxes checked: breakbeat, happy heavy synth, perfect drive, and even Underworld-like spoken word are bellowing in the background. If you are old enough to remember, you WILL do a happy dance; if you have the misfortune of being too young, slip the track to your grandpa and watch him start working his cane like a glow stick.

‘Cryosleep’ is a part of ‘Solidarity Is a Weapon’, the 19-track charity compilation set to be released via Turnland on February 5th. All proceedings will go to Rote Hilfe E.V organization. So who is “Rote Hilfe E.V.” and why does the money made with this compilation go to them? This organization puts the main focus on the financial and legal support of left activists who face repression in Germany and helps antifascists who are searching for political asylum in Germany.
