The Healing Power of Flame: Baritone Horn - Kristy Rowe (Gunnedah Shire Band, Jason Katsikaris)

Ascension takes it’s name from the inspirational phenomenon that was Felix Baumgartner’s ‘Red Bull Stratos Jump’, 2012. In an age where the stimulation of mass media is so prevalent, it is a rare thing for a single event to captivate the global consciousness. However, the sheer magnitude of human endeavor shown by the ‘Stratos’ project achieved just this.

The piece is structured in two continuous sections, representing both the ascending and descending stages of the jump by contrasting a gradually unfolding meditation against an adrenaline fueled scherzo. In line with this contrast, the progressive expansion of technical difficulty and intensity of solo instrumental writing tries to capture the physical experience of Baumgartner himself during the jump.

Ascension was jointly commissioned by the Central Band of the Royal Air Force (UK) and Brass Band of Battle Creek (USA) for performance by Steven Mead, Chris Jaudes and Ben Godfrey.

Looking In pays homage to the challenge faced by young musicians the World over, the search for a voice. In my opinion ones voice does not have to be trendsetting, merely 
honest and personal.

Though the work was composed intuitively, its structure does fall neatly into five unbroken sections, I. CONTEMPLATION, II. CONSIDERATION, III. BALANCE,  IV. CONFUSION and V.VALEDICTION -all preceded by a short introductory cadenza section. Like the personal journey itself the music is neither regular nor predictable. Peaks and troughs in melodic, rhythmic and harmonic intensity are plentiful but irregular, life after all has its ups and downs! The one constant throughout the work is the gradual revealing of clarity. Confused harmony is cleansed, rhythm simplified and melody is the focus of an adrenaline fueled final section. 

Above all I suppose that Looking In is introspective, perhaps even autobiographical. Having said that feel it important that its concept is left open enough to be inclusive of director, performers and listeners alike.

A Song to the Sea was composed for trombone soloist Brett Baker and Filton Concert Brass, for the CD recording 'Tales from the West Country'.  The piece tries to caputre the relaxing and gelntly view across Bristol's harnbour as seen from Clifton. The feel of the piece is both ambient and lyrical, with a focus on middle to high range suiting both trombone and the baritone horn.

Tom Davoren's short 'Olympic Overture' Return to the White City was commissioned by the Royal Air Force to commemorate the 2012 Olympic Games, held in Great Britain. Not a traditional 'Olympic Theme', the piece traces the running of a marathon: the chaotic start, the field separating, leaders emerging from the pack and a push to the finish. The piece is named after 'White City Stadium', the venue for long distance running in the 1908 London Games. More infomration available at www.tomdavoren.co.uk

Cries of Rhiannon was commissioned by the Cory Band in late 2012 for their soprano cornet soloist Steve Stewart. With the composer working closely with Steve throughout the composition process, the aim of the piece was to produce a musically substantial work for soprano cornet, whilst keeping duration acceptable for concert performance.

Cries of Rhiannon takes it's inspiration from the tragic story of Rhiannon and Pwll (a tale of loss, deception, murder and torture) from the 'First Branch' of the Mabinogi, a medieval collection of Welsh folklore.
