I composed this piece for piano trio (piano, violin and cello) as an homage to the late American composer and pianist Robert Helps.  While studying composition and cello performance at the University of South Florida, I had the pleasure of befriending Bob (as everyone called him), and the title 'Soirée' is in reference to the dinner parties he used to throw for small groups of friends, colleagues, visiting musicians, and a few misfit students such as myself.  

I based the entire piece on material derived from a short phrase of five chords from Helps's piano piece 'Shall We Dance?'.  This recording is from a 2006 concert at Symphony Space in NYC.

To put it simply, Bob was one of the most beautiful souls I've had the good fortune to cross paths with in this life, and he brought joy to everyone around him.  And that is to say nothing of his incredible musicianship as a pianist and composer.  Please, check out his music if you are not familiar with it.
