Stargazing from the sands of the Niterói beach, Tempos Futuros is low-end-led Brazilian futurism from one of Brazil’s most prolific and influential bassmen. As one third of legendary Brazilian trio Azymuth, Alex Malheiros has pioneered a one of a kind fusion of space-funk, samba and jazz since the early seventies. His playing can be heard on the records of Jorge Ben, Milton Nascimento, Roberto Carlos, Marcos Valle and Mark Murphy (to name a few), and he’s performed and toured with everyone from Stevie Wonder to Chick Corea.

Written and recorded in Niteroi, Brazil, overlooking Guanabara and the beaches, mountains and forests of Rio de Janeiro, Tempos Futuros has deep roots in Brazilian soil. The rhythms of Malheiros’ homeland have always permeated his music. But just like the Oscar Niemeyer designed Niterói Contemporary Art Museum which stands spaceship-like over the water, Tempos Futuros - while inspired by terrestrial forms, reaches out deep into the great unknown. 

Produced by acclaimed London-based producer Daniel Maunick, who has worked with Marcos Valle, Azymuth, Terry Callier, and Ivan Conti, the funk comes full circle. Daniel’s father Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick and Alex Malheiros shared a reciprocal stream of influence throughout the 80s, between London and Rio; Azymuth and Incognito; brit-funk and samba-funk. But just as with Azymuth’s music, you can also hear the influence of stateside jazz-funk masters like Roy Ayers, Weather Report, Lonnie Liston Smith, Mtume and Pleasure.

Tempos Futuros features Alex’s daughter, a Brazilian star in her own right, vocalist Sabrina Malheiros, Brazilian percussion master Sidinho Moreira,  London based saxophonist Sean Khan, Marcos Valle’s go-to drummer Massa, and keyboard player Dudu Viana.

Sadboimxstt’s 5-track disco house EP is a deep dive into the soulful heartbeat of the dancefloor. Built on a foundation of lush melodic keys and hypnotic grooves, each track breathes new life into carefully chosen samples from the golden eras of disco, jazz, and soul spanning the 70s through the 90s.

The EP is defined by its memorizing vocals, lifted from timeless records and reshaped into modern-day anthems that blur nostalgia with fresh energy. Funk-driven basslines roll beneath shimmering chords, while crisp percussion locks dancers into an irresistible rhythm.

Every song carries Sadboimxstt’s unique groove — a blend of warm analog textures, hypnotic repetition, and emotional depth that turns simple loops into moments dancing being free. The result is a body of work that celebrates the past while pushing disco house into new, melodic territory.

This project isn’t just for the dancefloor — it’s for late-night drives, sunrise sessions, and anyone chasing that euphoric moment when music feels both timeless and brand new.

More new members in the Toy Tonics family: JOEL HOLMES & CODY CURRIE joined the Berlin crew. They will release a couple of EPs. 

You might know Joel Holmes: American jazz pianist and keyboard player who has been member of Roy Hargrove’s legendary Grammy nominated band, but also is part of Carl Craig’s synthesizer ensemble. Joel is living in Berlin now, where he is involved in the new vibrant Neo-Jazz scene. (Yes! Berlin used to be a Techno city, but it’s becoming kind of a Jazz town now!) 
In Berlin Joel throws monthly jam sessions (the Urban Base Jam) where the creme de la creme of Berlin ex-pad jazz musicians meets up. American, Europeans.. Crazy things can happen here. Like when Erykah Badu played Berlin in 2019 and her complete band came to jam at Joel’s session after their gig.

Joel now takes the next step: he teamed up with Cody Currie: 24 year old London born talent, who already made some waves in the house scene. Cody is known as a stylized producer, with a unique recognisable sound. Much of his craft was homed in studying a bachelors in music in London. His most known work by now might be a jazzy reinvention of ‘Devils Shoestring’ with over half a million plays on SC and YT. With his new works Cody is coming away from sampling, Working only with live instrumentation.

Joel & Cody both  live in Berlin now where they met Toy Tonics head honcho Mathias „Kapote“ Modica. And when they met there was a vibe. All three have their roots and jazz music share similar ideas about how dance-music should evolve and could sound in 2020. (In fact Kapote Modica studied jazz piano, too and has been playing in bands before getting into electronic music)

Joel & Cody are working in a great Berlin basement studio, at Cody’s home. Working on a new way of combining jazz-funk with real musicianship, MPC grooves and live instruments to get a new , fresh approach on  dance-music. And there will be a lot coming up in the next years.

After a recent away game at Sonny Fodera’s Solotoko label with ‘Matchbox’, Friend Within returns to his home turf of Toolroom. It’s been a busy Summer for the Liverpudlian who’s clocked up no less than 8 dates at Ibiza superclub Eden, a Fabric gig and a recent collab with indie disco heroes Friendly Fires and a track entitled ‘Offline’.

‘Set You Free’ is a trademark outing; A lush house groove, beautiful piano chords and some insanely catchy vocals. The whole thing is produced with finesse and oozes class and it’s this reason that all Friend Within productions really are head & shoulders above the rest. This is a welcomed and triumphant return to Toolroom from one of the most exciting and talented house producers on the scene right now.

We have an interesting single in the shape of ‘Nothing to Give’. The record came about as a collaboration between hotly tipped Polish duo Rebeka and Lisbon disco don Mirror People and evolved into a record that sees the two acts each recording their own version of a single composition. An initial sharing of ideas and musical parts led to the development of new concepts and different directions laying the way for this unusual approach at 
a collaborative release and bring through two very different takes on things.

Rebeka is made up of charismatic vocalist Iwona Skwarek and talented producer Bartosz Szczesny; the pair have had quite a buzz around them, even prior to their superb debut ‘Stars’ on Discotexas last year. Mirror People AKA Rui Maia should need little introduction with a string of stellar releases for the likes of Permanent Vacation, Hands of Time and of course Discotexas.

The single opens with Rebeka’s version of ‘Nothing to Give’, a pulsing three and a half minute plus arrangement that puts Iwona’s emotive vocals at the heart of things with a stirring mix of pads, synths and bubbling bass working around her. The Mirror People version comes next with Rui taking things into extended 4/4 territory with a rolling disco take that brings a certain sunshine to this superb song.

This is an unusual and unique approach to collaboration that has yielded stunning results, enjoy!
