Broken Hip Jams - NYC 2010-2012

Every December 21st as a part of Make Music Winter, Bell by Bell creates the opportunity for anyone excited about public space, music, and cold weather to be a part of a procession that generates a coordinated, unique, soundscape on the streets of New York. Through the distribution of 100 bells and the guidance of a team of flag conductors, the piece shimmers in the streets. Each participant contributes to the creation of a sonorous, atmospheric piece through carrying out one simple act: ringing a bell. The tracks contained in this set are field recordings from previous events.

Gradient vs Drone uses polyrhythm and harmony to explore equal ratios expressed in both rhythm and pitch. As the drone rhythm and tone go on unchanging, their gradient counterparts escalate in tempo and pitch, stopping at prescribed junctures of rhythmic and harmonic consonance. The drone tempo is eighty beats per minute and the pitch C. The gradient tempo and pitch begin their journey playing in unison and eventually climb to 100 BPM and the note E. The rhythmic and harmonic ratio at this first stop is 5/4. C and E form a major 3rd harmony which is produced by the two pitches having a 5/4 ratio, while the the two tempos are 100 and 80 BPM.

After spending a few minutes of indulging in this consonant space, the gradients begin the next journey towards the 3/2 ratio. These passages between ratios are highly dissonant, creating tension and momentum leading to the next rhythmic and harmonic destination.

The 3/2 ratio section is marked by 120 BPM rhythm over the 80 BPM drone and a perfect 5th harmony. This is the final consonant resting place. The finale is marked by exploration of the perfect 5th harmony, by stacking 5ths on top of each other creating a veritable wall of sound as the drummers continue their polyrhythm until the piece concludes.

For Make Music New York 2011, the piece was performed amid the urban bustle of the Lower East Side. By placing the drummers and PAs across the street from each other, the performance fundamentally spatialized the interlocking components of the piece. Within this context, the piece was accompanied by a wide range of aural layers as people chattered on the street, buses drove by and wind blew through trees overhead. The audience formed in a very fluid way as people on foot, on bikes and in cars encountered the performance as a part of their movement through the city.

Fire Escapes is a site-specific piece that I composed and performed with 5 other percussionists. The piece was featured as a part of Conflux 2010, a psychogeography festival here in New York City. This recording is from my phone but actually captures everything pretty well. I haven't edited the front of the track so the first minute and a half is me taping the phone down and us settling in.
