Early bench, out of Brooklyn New York, sounded like a cross between The Butthole Surfers and Bardo Pond, an art-damaged jam band with a sprinkling of noise funk. In the late 90s this trio was too loud for CGBG’s and too bridge and tunnel for the Knitting factory. Long before “lo-fi” was a thing, they produced their own DIY cassettes, recorded on a 4 track TASCAM Portastudio and sold them at gigs and record stores. Anxious bench (1987, 2006 remaster), Resin (1988), Cranial Crop (1998) and Steal Home (1990)
Eventually Jim Gibson of Noiseville Records (Action Swingers, Unholly Swill, Skullflower) heard their tapes and put out 2 singles and a compilation. Backseat Lover / Nightmares (1989) did well enough to break into the Top Ten on collage radio, and is seen by many as one of the first stoner metal releases of it’s kind. Their second single, Hey Mister (1991) moved to an even more accessible sound, completely leaving behind the experimental noise of their early tapes. 
After a long hiatus bench reunited in upstate New York and recorded there swan song release, The Return And Exit Of The Chaven Kline Buzz Kill Program (2004). Returning to there original jam noise band mode thus bookending their creative output.
