Plugging in the old guitar once more, and rediscovering the love I have for it. There are times when trying out something new is good, but too much of a new thing makes us forget the good old stuff we have loved and used to love for a reason.

Winter is coming. Days darken. Lights are being put up everywhere. With a cup of something we will enjoy the glow that winter brings, and we dance.

Here is to winter! Keep yourself moving and warm.

Written for a Masterclass exercise writing film score (with Hans Zimmer). The assignment: think of one of your favourite cities and one of your favourite periods of time, combine those two and create a sound palette for that city and time.

I had to take some detours and liberties here. A favourite city already sets the tone for a happy and pleasant tune, and I had a hard time avoiding making it sound too sugary and sweet.

One day the idea I present here came to me while listening to Chingon’s “Malagueña Salerosa”, the song played at the end of Tarantino’s “Kill Bill II”, and by the band with one of the band members being Robert Rodriguez. It had to be a gritty place, an unforgiving and raw Mexico inhabited by Machetes and Mariachis. It is madness, mayhem, you have no idea what is going to happen between dusk and dawn, but it can only end up bad.

And that is what it became. Not a place that can be listed as a favourite, but definitely a favourite one to write music for.

What piece of music would you write for one of your favourite cities and one of your favourite periods of time? That was the assignment.

Well, I had to take some liberties here. A favourite time in a favourite city already sets the tone for a happy and pleasant tune, and I found it very hard not making it too sugary and sweet.

One morning I was listening in the car to “Malagueña Salerosa”, the song played at the end of Tarantino’s “Kill Bill II”. The song is a rock version of a well-known Mexican song, although usually played in a more traditional way. It is played by Chignon, the band formed by Robert Rodriguez. Then this idea came to me. Flip it around. Make it a gritty place, an unforgiving and raw Mexico inhabited by Machetes and Mariachis. It is madness, mayhem, you have no idea what is going to happen between dusk and dawn, but it can only end up bad.

And that is what it became. Not a place that can be listed as a favourite, but definitely a favourite one to write music for.

Día de los Muertos

This is a song that I have been working on for a long time, and for good reason. Getting something decent proved harder than thought. But I like the genre and the energy it gives you, which is why it kept me going.

Even though I may not have gotten it right -- it certainly cannot compete with an #Armin and its chances to be featured on #ArmadaNightRadio are, well -- it drives a point across: Gone. The song will hit you with all the energy it has packed into those barely 3 minutes. Over and gone before you realise it was even there.

Full of energy with little rest in between -- something that may need more attention in the future -- add to that the two melody lines that, instead of separating into two songs, I stubbornly insisted on having in one song: What could go wrong?

We listen, we breathe. We dance, we see. We move, remain still.

Take a moment to listen to yourself with this song. Dance with your eyes closed. Dance, float, sit down. But breathe and listen.

With a hint of both sadness and excitement we are off. Going further, exploring, finding new flavours and ideas, experiencing different cultures, and passing time in solitude, but travel we must.
