During the 90's under the name the UNDERDOG I remixed and produced a vast variety of artists, both underground and mainstream rooted in my love of Hip Hop, Dub, Jazz Rock, Electronics & Psychedelia. Working with Massive Attack, Unkle, Gravediggaz, New Kingdom, U2, The Pharcyde, Run DMC, and many other iconic artists of that era, I made a name for myself creating melodically dark & abstract beat heavy music, a precursor to Trip Hop, an original take on a sound that had predominantly been solely US driven.  

Starting with my own UK Rap label 'Bite it' I producing releases for legendary London rap crew The Brotherhood as well as released iconic records by mavericks like Lewis Parker and The Scientists of Sound. During the mid 90's The Brotherhood signed to Virgin Records and their debut album ELEMENTALZ was highly acclaimed and took on legendary status as one of the finest UK rap albums of all time. 

Most of these records are unavailable to listen to on any streaming services or CD (the majority being vinyl only) So I decided to showcase a selection of my finished Underdog productions on my monthly NTS show.

UNDERDOG - REMIXES + PRODUCTIONS 1993-1999

Philipp Lauer is a veteran German DJ and producer who’s been carving his path through the scene for over two decades. Known for his diverse musical portfolio, he’s ventured into many collaborative projects and aliases over the years. Each of them offering a unique sonic experience and pushing the boundaries of electronic music to explore new territories.
 
You might have heard of him as Arto Mwambe with Christian Beißwenger, Black Spuma with Fabrizio Mammarella, Crabsticks with Bård Aasen Lødemel, Hotel Lauer with his brother Jacob, T & P with Tim Sweeney, Talamanca System with Gerd Janson and Mark Barrot, Tuff City Kids with Gerd Janson (again), and of course solo as Lauer.
 
His musical journey can be traced back to his early days as a skateboard kid enamored with the sounds of the '80s and '90s. It was through his exploration of electronic music that he found his true calling, diving headfirst into production despite humble beginnings with cheap software and a steep learning curve.
 
While his music is deeply rooted in house and disco, his sound is characterized by its melodic beauty and infectious grooves. He blends elements of nostalgia with modern-day sensibilities, creating a sound that is uniquely his own.
 
As Philipp continues to evolve and explore new musical horizons, one thing remains constant: his true passion for music. Whether he's in the studio crafting beats or behind the decks captivating audiences with his electrifying sets, Lauer's love for music shines through in everything he does. With each new project and collaboration, he continues to cement his status as one of the most influential figures in electronic music today.
 
For him, music is not just a profession but a lifelong passion, something he would continue to pursue even if it didn't pay the bills. We believe his musical journey is far from being over.
