Each year, we ask a few artists from the Dekmantel Selectors line-up to deliver a mix in anticipation of the new edition. Who could be a better fit than DJ Python to re-initiate this tradition?

Even before Dulce Compañia, which introduced the Python alias to the world, Brian Piñeyro has been providing a wide array of unique sounds to those who care to listen. To be fair, he makes it hard not to care, and also to describe his ambling, dembow-inspired rhythms as something other than ‘deep reggaeton’. But if Piñeyro has taught us one thing, it is that music is just moods flowing into one another. Sometimes, the mood is a percussive therapy session, and sometimes it warps drone-driven electronica, tingly synths, and steely dancehall.

It is unsurprising that this mix is all about the mood too. A 60-minute journey across genuinely emotive songs and honeyed hymns. In his words, it’s just about “enjoying the time with people around you, whatever shape the people or the time may take”. When listening to this mix, keep in mind DJ Python’s approach to making soup: you can only really do it well if you allow yourself to move beyond the recipe. The only thing left to do is let go and get locked in.

About the mix:

"I had toured for the first time in Australia late 2018 and it made a massive impression on me. In many ways, it reminded me of a warmer version of Canada. People were incredibly kind and welcoming and I was blown away by the hospitality the promoters and local artists showed me. I also absolutely adored the incredible nature I saw in Australia, having played in Hobart and Brisbane and Melbourne and Sydney and Adelaide and Hopkins’ Creek Festival in a volcanic crater, I fell in love with the landscapes I saw and the animals local only to this part of the world. So when I first sat down to think about this mix, the bushfires had just started raging and the news was beyond depressing to see. Everywhere I saw online was just videos and pictures of burned animals and ash that was once blooming flora & fauna. A fan from Australia sent me a DM on IG, telling me how my song “Terracotta”, as it’s a track that talks about the sea and land, was able to give them a lot of peace during a time that was anything but.

And so I decided I wanted to make a mix that not only paid tribute to this incredible music scene and country and its amazing artists, but was musically able to provide a sense of solace to people who perhaps feel hopeless about our time on this planet. That is partly why I began the mix with music by indigenous tribes from East Timor—as “modern” people it’s sad to see that we’ve lost touch with the roots of our life on this planet as we know it, and I think we have so much to learn from indigenous cultures and their respect for mother nature. I also chose a lot of dub music, and music that featured lots of organic drums for similar reasons, as these styles of music owe as much to indigenous folk music as they do to modern electronic music. Ultimately I wanted the mix to feel like slipping into a warm bath. Hope it was successful. 🙂"

Eris Drew is one of those artists who seemed to blow up over night, but who had actually been hard at work for decades. A long-time residency at Chicago's Smart Bar brought her to international attention, and her own Motherbeat parties at various places around Europe furthered that reputation. It is there that she manages to cook up pure, unadulterated dance floor love and euphoria with hi-energy selections and a unifying sense of oneness that is put together with her own so called “orchestration” mixing techniques. An inquisitive musician and innovative recording artist, she has also just put out her debut solo EP on Interdimensional Transmissions and runs T4T LUV NRG with partner Octo Octa. 

This week's mix is all of the above and more: a throbbing, impulsive and full bodied experience that serves up the most bumping house grooves but run through with the warm ambient glow of a post-rave comedown. The music feels at classic but also thoroughly contemporary: it will make you pump your fist in sheer joy, but also sends warm waves of euphoria through your body. This is the sound of the Motherbeat.

"In a recent interview for DJ Mag I talk about my connection to the song “Secrets of Mediation” by Dutch producers Alex Dijksterhuis (Jamez) & Gaston Steenkist (Dobre). At Chicago raves in 1994 and 1995, this track revealed to me that modern dance music contains archaic ritual elements such as trance-inducing resonances, penetrating sacred drums, and language transformed into glossolalia. My DJ mix for Dekmantel is inspired by my formative dance experiences and by the intense extended sets I play at psychedelic raves such as Motherbeat and No Way Back. The mix includes bass music, progressive, breaks, house, techno, and minimal, all of which I collage, drop and scratch to put us into a tunneling trance."
