Which King - Change Perception

In 2002 I put my name forward for a band development course at Red Tape Studios in Sheffield. Anyone selected would work with the music management and production students over a nine month period on recording and playing live along with seminars on all aspects of the industry. I submitted a demo under the name bRoKeN fAcE (didn't like the idea of being a solo artist so came up with an alter ego) and after playing a showcase set at the studio, I was picked for the course. It was a great way of meeting people and my first experience of professional recording, working with Tom Henthorne who I have remained friends with ever since and am now working with again on my current projects

APPROACH

Each band has a sound, which is usually the sound they produce when they play together. If the singer needs a mic to be heard, then that band’s sound already relies on technology. But take technology too far, and you lose the essence of their sound.

All my productions sound as loud and energetic as the experience you have when you hear them play together – even when you turn the volume right down…

… that’s what technology is for me.


TECHNIQUE

I’m constantly innovating new production, recording and mixing techniques – and I don’t just mean I have all the latest whizz-bang plug-ins. And I’ve developed a post-production style that has become just as important to my recordings as pre-production.

I make each production better than the last by stubbornly pursuing what I consider to be great production style, while jarring my mind open to bands’ production influences…

…plug-ins don’t make great productions – I do!


OUTCOME

A good recording becomes a great production when people can easily identify it, and identify with it. So just as a well-produced album hangs together as a single work, so everything a band is (songs, clothes, lyrics, ethics, lighting, sound, artwork, performance, etc.) should be indisputably THAT BAND…

…this is what I capture.


BIOG

I'm a Music Producer, and a Recording and Mix Engineer from Sheffield UK.

My family were profoundly musical when I was growing up, and I was classically trained from an early age. But when I discovered alternative rock in my mid-teens, it completely changed my perception of “good music”. I taught myself guitar and bass, and I've been in bands ever since, constantly expanding my musical taste and appreciation.

I produced my first album when I was 19 and developed my sound engineering skills throughout my 20s in studios like Jump Recording Studio and the much reputed Yellow Arch Studios. I also got really slick during 9 years as a live sound engineer, working in well-known venues like the Leadmill, and touring venues like Cardiff Arena and Hammersmith Apollo.

In 2006, I opened up Ebb-Tone Recording Studio in Sheffield with my band mates. The sound quality of the studio has improved massively because of the investment made possible by success. I’ve been lucky enough to record every kind of band in every kind of style, including a whole bunch of albums.

When I produced Downslide’s self-titled debut album, we worked really hard together to produce something unique but honest. We used their influences as a focus: accessible urban flavours with heavy guitars and vocals. I'm dead pleased with the sound and the shape of the album, and especially that it's a true reflection of the band as they are.

I also produced “You’re An Ocean Deep My Brother” by Firesuite, which I really think is a classic album: relentless in places, mournful and evocative in others, and definitely an album that is much weightier than the sum of its constituent tracks. We did it together, and the form, sound and musicianship make it a real artistic success.
