Yosuzume (夜雀 – “night sparrow”) is a yōkai in Japanese folklore – a supernatural creature that takes the form of a sparrow and appears at night, especially along mountain paths. It is rarely seen, but its sharp “chi-chi-chi” chirping surrounds travelers in the dark – a disorienting sound considered a bad omen. Hearing the night sparrow is said to foretell an encounter with a wolf or stray dog.

In some regions, especially in Wakayama and Kumano, it’s believed that catching a Yosuzume brings on night-blindness – a punishment for trying to interfere with a spirit of the mountains. In places like Tanokuchi and Tomiyama, being possessed by a night sparrow was seen as misfortune. To ward it off, locals would recite incantations – one asks whether the chirping birds long for a shinagi rod, and if so, to strike them with a single pan (チッチッチと鳴く鳥は、シナギの棒が恋しいか、恋しくばパンと一撃ち); another calls on the divine wind of Ise to blow them away (チッチッチと鳴く鳥を、はよ吹き給え、伊勢の神風).

Neither bird nor ghost, Yosuzume lives in the space between sound and shadow – a reminder that in Japanese folklore, what you hear is often more dangerous than what you see.
