For the seventh Krankbrother release, Jody Barr returns to the label and presents two new cuts of straight up, analogue techno, whilst A Sagittariun hops on board with a cosmically charged remix.

“Sheila’s Demands” is a brooding and weighty slab of mechanical house, its reserved tempo lets the growling synth FX wind around granite hard beats and spacey atmospherics, dotted with drama inducing breakdowns for maximum effect.

Barr’s second cut, “Coloured Silk”, treads a similar path; tenacious beats and heavy bass stabs build the backbone whilst brass synths randomly play in discordant patterns, the solid kick drum keeping it all held together.  

A Sagittariun, delivers a remix of ‘Coloured Silk’ that could well be one of his most dancefloor friendly cuts to date.  Ramping up the tempo and snatching at the atmospheric bed of Barr’s original mix, A Sagittariun fires out a driving remix resplendent with classic techno tropes of arpeggiated acid basslines, melodic chords and wormhole synth work, classy work from ‘The Archer’.

The first time I went to Chicago back in 1996 I was doing a story for Muzik magazine about the producers and labels from there that were exciting me at the time (Ron & Chez, Cajmere/Cajual/Relief, Gemini/Guidance...) Chez Damier was my guide for most of my trip and one night he introduced me to The Red Dog and I ended up chatting to an up'n'coming house producer. His take on the genre was one that's always stuck with me. "The thing about house," he said, "is that it's simple, all you need to make it is an s1000 and a good bag of weed."

These days, when even @carlcraig is tweeting "Too many plugins, too little time", the beauty of a simple block-rockin' beat can get forgotten about in a never-ending stream of production complexity. Thank goodness then for Sante Sansone; not a name that everyone will know but if you follow the Traxsource chart, you will have seen his "Rising" hit the top spot recently. His version of house is very much like that young kid from Chicago; great loops and a heavy beat is all you need.

Jazzanova consume to welcome a series of excellent remixes of tracks form their latest and great album, The Pool. Next up is the legendary house shaman Osunlade, who serves up four fantastic versions of ‘Everything I Wanted’ feat. Charlotte OC. 

Osunlade is the Yoruba Records boss and spiritual character with an uplifting, jazzy, deep and afro tinged house sound. Born in St Louis, Missouri, he is a hugely prolific musician, composer and producer who brings spellbinding moods and grooves to everything he does, as these four new remixes prove once again. 

Opening things up is the Yoruba Soul Mix, which flips the original into a steamy, surging house track with smeared synths propping up the expressive vocal and loose percussion. An instrumental version of this one allows the soft edged keys and supple rubber drums to come to the fore and cast their spell on the dance floor. 

Then comes a Beats Mix which is all about the woody, organic drums and scattered hits. The result is a warm and infectious track that is perfectly designed to get bodies moving, and last of all is a Yoruba Soul Stripped Mix. The fantastic vocal is the centre piece, with knocking percussion and underlapping drums all adding to the spine tingling nature of this most soulful house track. 

Over the past decade the German group, consisting of Alexander Barck, Claas Brieler, Jürgen von Knoblauch, Stefan Leisering and Axel Reinemer, have worked on a multitude of projects. They’ve toured live with the band, hosted radio shows, DJed, remixed tracks by Hugh Masekela, Joe Bataan, Aron Ottignon, Malika Ayane (and many more), curated their labels Sonar Kollektiv and Notes On A Journey and recorded a live studio sessions album of some of their most beloved work. It’s been 23 years since they first got together, and their latest album drew from all those years of experience while exploring new territories.

As we are preparing for Tom Trago's new album, which is due early 2010, we close off Tom's Voyage Direct release with the third and final remix EP.
This time up and coming Amsterdam local dj and beat maker FS Green comes up with two remixes, giving both tracks an surprising, new feel. While the more downtempo vibe of his remix of Voyage Direct wouldn't have been out of place on a Beat Dimensions release, his remix of Lost In The Streets goes uptempo and has a cross over dance floor potential. Banging! It comes as a limited edition, green vinyl edition.

Side A is an extended disco version of Use Me, morphing in to and out of the original like butter. Clocking over 8 minutes Use Me Again becomes somewhat a modern take on the original disco version. It’s got enough drive to make a dance floor go crazy.

Side B meanwhile is an exclusive from his live set. Here he strips the classic “Over & Over” to the minimum before sliding into the original groove only for a moment, only to continue to ride the rhythm again.

A future where all genres and directions are fused together, from soul to techno, from hip hop to electro and from classical to disco. Over the past two years Tom has spent countless hours recording for 'Iris' in his studio, on the road and in Los Angeles, where he recorded 'So Cold', together with Om'mas Keith of Sa-Ra. Tom Trago is back, giddily dancing out of the studio into the dizzying light of a European summer. Tucked under his arm are the masters for his third album, The Light Fantastic.

Since his most recent appearance on Rush Hour last autumn, Trago has spent most of his time in the studio. Over four memorable months, he constantly jammed, recorded, tweaked and produced tracks, until he had enough strong material to put together what might just be his best full-length to date. 

Along the way, he was joined by an impressive guest list of guests and collaborators from Amsterdam and beyond, all of who were roped in after “popping into the studio to hang out”. 

You’ll have to wait to hear the album, but the good news is that there’s an enticing teaser of what’s to come in the shape of this formidable three-track taster. One of the tracks, the chiming, loose-limbed, bass-heavy workout “Avenido”, is exclusive to this 12”.

When he sat down to make The Light Fantastic, Trago was keen to recapture the essence of his early work, and particularly the melodic warmth, kaleidoscopic chords and robust grooves that characterized his 2009 debut album, Voyage Direct. This time, though, he wanted to rely less on samples and apply the lessons learnt from four years of largely acclaimed production work. As a result, The Light Fantastic oozes a gleeful sense of fun, whilst retaining the depth and definition that has always been a hallmark of Trago’s work.

The two album tracks featured on this sampler confirm the rich dividends that this new approach brought. “True Friends”, featuring the combined talents of Brit-in-Amsterdam Ben Westbeech and local hero San Proper, bristles with loved-up positivity, all bubbling electronic melodies, fuzzy vocoder vocals and jaunty, bottom-end bounce.

Then there’s the small matter of “Two Together”, an extra large helping of the kind of loopy, feel-good deep house funk with which he made his name. Expertly teased, tweaked and produced, it sees nagging hooks, darting synths, jazz keys and disco stabs riding a relentless, full-throttle groove.
