Dutch selector Tom Trago dials in a vinyl-only offering that provides a slice of warm, vibrant and sunkissed escapism just in time for his appearance at Puglia's Polifonic Festival. 

Speaking on the entry, which features tracks from house heroes Ron Trent and Soichi Terada, among others, Trago described it as an encapsulation of the "late-night emotions of the Bari area [in Puglia, Italy]".

So.... Nordic Music Export asked me to do a little mix or playlist.
After picking out almost 100 records and not knowing how to attack this(though I know some people would have enjoyed hearing Pekka Pohjola, Sigur Ros, Dungen, Buki Yamaz and Terje Rypdal shoehorned together)I decided to concentrate entirely on swedish exotica and mostly quite recent and uptempo stuff. This is not meant as a full overview or representation of what's going down just a few of my favourite things to come out of Sweden.

Prins Thomas Presents A Love Letter To Sweden(For Nordic Playlist)

It is a wonder it has taken us this long to get Tom Trago involved in our series. The Dutchman has been a pillar of the Amsterdam scene for years, either as a producer for Rush Hour and a veteran of no fewer than three artist albums, or as a resident at places like the sorely missed Trouw. He also runs his own Voyage Direct label, has worked with everyone form Aardvark to Bok Bok and, of course, played our festival once again this past weekend. Trago’s sound--in both the booth and the studio--is a colourfully eclectic mix of disco and afro, hip hop and jazz, as well as house, techno and electro, and it as charming as the man himself. 

His two hour session for us is a perfectly soothing selection to get you back into the groove after a full on weekend at the festival. From horizontal ambient and deeply seductive house, the mix stays pretty spaced out and lazy for the first hour, before more driving drums and pumping chords colour the second half. Always warm, human and inviting, it is a suitably personable mix from one of house music’s nice guys.

The Maghreban is the most recent alias of an artist who has projects dating as far back as 1995. They deal in everything from drum & bass to jazz, hip hop to techno, and this most recent moniker doesn’t find the producer narrowing down his scope in any way. Proof comes with his debut album 01DEAS on R&S next month. It is a wildly diverse record that takes in 13 different genres studies from afro rock to freak house, jazz beats to dub rollers. Each one is perfectly produced and sounds utterly authentic. 

It should be no surprise, then, that the hour selection he has put together for us is just as wilfully schizophrenic. It’s a masterful mega mix of sounds and scenes and styles that really shouldn’t go together, but they do. Curious synth jams segue into serene electro, swinging dub house brushes up with horror soundtracks and high summer afro grooves dance next to cosmic disco in effortlessly coherent ways from start to finish.

In the next couple of months, we will release 6 podcasts by some of the exciting artists from the line-up. This year’s podcasts challenges the artists to work around a theme or idea they picked theirselves. Next up: Dekmantel label member Tom Trago.

Trago can be seen as one of the main key players of Amsterdam's nightlife. Having grown up in a musical family, he picked up on his love for music really fast and has been making music from the age of 15 ever since. A collaboration with Aardvarck and Awanto3, a debut single on Rush Hour and many DJ-sets worldwide followed, which made Trago the acclaimed musician he is today. Earlier this month we had the honour to release Trago’s newest LP 'Bergen', which was made in the same-titled village in The Netherlands and sees him putting out music through a new live set-up.

In anticipation of Dekmantel Selectors, Trago cooked up a special mix for us containing lots of disco and summer-vibes. "This mix is dedicated to those late summer nights and early mornings. Mostly tracks that i play when i feel that there is freedom and acceptance among the crowd. A lot of home listenings jams And easy groovers. Sit back And relax!".

A curated series where we commission artists to make an hour long mix of whatever inspires them to experiment, produce, play out and what they listen to.

John Tejada is a Vienna-born, Los Angeles-based electronic music composer and DJ. Tejada’s professional output of music began in 1994 and has never let up, including four albums for the revered label Kompakt, plus releases on Pokerflat, Cocoon, Plug Research, Seventh City, Playhouse, Defected, and his own label since 1996, Palette Recordings. Tejada has also been responsible for remixing over 100 songs for acts including The Postal Service, Télépopmusic, The Field, Bomb The Bass, Way Out West, Kevin Saunderson, Darren Emerson, Gui Boratto, Simian Mobile Disco and many others. Tejada’s latest venture as Wajatta is a new musical collaboration with international star Reggie Watts, having released their debut album, Casual High Technology, in 2018 and latest album Don’t Let Get You Down in 2020 on Brainfeeder. 

Tejada has traveled to more than 30 countries DJing and performing live at clubs – Berghain (Berlin), Fabric (London), Rex Club (Paris), Womb (Tokyo) – festivals such as Dance Valley (Netherlands), Decibel Festival (Seattle), Dekmantel Festival (Amsterdam), Detroit Electronic Music Festival (aka Movement), Mutek (Montreal and Mexico), Sonar Festival (Spain and Tokyo) and Sync Festival (Greece), as well as esteemed venues such as the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and twice at Walt Disney Concert Hall, both in Los Angeles.

Inspired by a variety of genres, both new and vintage, the Amsterdam-based DJ hosts a bi-monthly show on Red Light Radio, and has recently released a new EP entitled ‘Midnite’ on the London-based record label Release Sustain. The set he prepared for us is ideal to listen to at home, he says, whilst reading, having breakfast, or during a cooking sesh. Breathe in, breathe out, stay home — enjoy.

Brooklyn-based House expert Justin Cudmore is picking up pace again, after his Train Dance release on Phonica White in fall, and delivers a full hour of well- and wisely chosen music surely making one dance on the train and the floor and around. Shifting elegantly back and forth between the different facettes the genre has to offer, Cudmore compiled a delicate mixture of music that goes deep into the core and beyond and covers Justin's extremely catchy signature sound, which one knows from his releases on The Bunker New York, Phonica or Honey Soundsystem. Namely Cudmore's sound combines a hypnotic momentum with extremely (dance-able) lush bass lines and just the right amount of vocals, taking his listeners deep into an imagined sweaty underground club to enjoy avant-garde music that was meant to shake one's body through a night at the Bunker. As smoothly as the DJ Justin guides his audience through this art:cast special, does the person, the artist lead one through this interview giving insights into his everyday life and how it has changed with and within the pandemic, plans for his project with the The Carry Nation, Smart Bar in his hometown Chicago and the desire to crawl on walls and swing around.

Tom Trago – one of the leading lights of the Dutch electronic music underground, who defined the house and electronica sound of Amsterdam like few others. He is a globe-trotting DJ, producer, live performer and label owner who enjoys nothing more than championing both overlooked gems and fresh sounds from his own country. Tom Trago held residencies at renowned Amsterdam institutions Trouw and De School and name any prestigious festival or clubs worldwide – pretty sure he’s played there.

He once claimed that he felt a physical need to make music every day, and it’s hard to think of anyone whose immersion in music is quite as complete. Tom Trago is known for his versatility across electronic music genres, deep beats and grooves, and remixes for giants such as Depeche Mode. His genre-blurring sound and unique style have made him an influential figure in the world of electronic music.
